Wentz contract put Cowboys in precarious situation

Lets make no mistake about this, Wentz gave the Eagles a massive hometown discount. With remaining money owed ($154 M) and 6 years that is an avg of $25.7 Mill year. If Wentz even sniffs another MVP type year, that contract becomes most favorable team contract in all of sports. Wentz is only the #9th highest paid QB in football with top 3 potential. Garoppolo & Stafford are still ahead of him in avg yearly number (let that sink in). Wentz contract will allow Eagles to be aggressive in FA or resigning their players.

Now for Cowboys, Wentz hometown discount contract put Dallas in a bad spot because Dak will want more. That won't play out well on national or local level because most see Wentz as superior talent. Every game Dak contract will be compared to Wentz. Every losing streak will come back to Dak contract. Its really this simple. Since Wentz & Dak new contracts are happening at same time, If Dak makes more money then he has to out-perform Wentz over next six years. IMO thats wishful thinking.
I think Wentz deal to happen before Dak's is a huge plus for both sides. I wouldn't be mad if they both got the exact same deal.

Dak can't SERIOUSLY demand more money than Wentz. They're give or take similar in what they give you. Wentz with the higher ceiling but a serious lack of durability to play out the entire season and in the playoffs.

Eagles basically set the market for Dallas for Dak with Wentz's contract. It is going to be 32/yr only thing left to work out is the guaranteed money where the cowboys could try to underpay dak for his lower ceiling going forward.

Wouldn't be surprised if both deals come out to be almost identical. Infact, it would make the most sense.

The Eagles have one Championship in the history of the modern NFL, you don't think they've given you enough reason for distrust?

Jerry has given us Three Championships, all in his first 7 seasons, and I don't trust our front office.
This Post gets a Face Palm . . . Weak and a little Pathetic

This man watched his team win a Super Bowl a couple years ago. . . Which was a result of all the Right Moves that Front Office made

Meanwhile the COWBOYS. . . Not so much. . . Jerry publicly berated And Ran off Jimmy Johnson . . . Then when Jerry had the ULTIMATE WEAPON in Zeke in 2016. . . :lmao2: He decided to Ride with the Inaccurate Inexperienced "ROOKIE:huh: . . . Genius !!! . . . Pure Genius:facepalm:

Yeah As Far as TRUST GOES . . . I put Mine In McClay only . . . But as far as OutSmarting Jerry I give the Edge to Philly

They are reportedly far apart on a deal right now... IMO, the Wentz deal sets things up nicely for Dak’s team.

1. He has better numbers pretty much across the board
2. He is more durable and available
3. He has a better W/L record head to head vs Wentz since they came into the league

Any agent worth his salt is going to ask for more money than Wentz based on that. Wentz has the pedigree and is the consensus “more talented player”— but Dak can point to some legitimate rationale as to why he should be paid comparably or more than Wentz.

Dallas has one point of leverage: time. They don’t “have” to sign Dak this year. They can roll the dice and make him prove it this year. They can punt and use the franchise tag next year if they have to. That may in fact be what happens.

Of course, they are screwed if Dak outperforms Wentz and plays well this year... next year he will be asking for top 5 money and would potentially have some skins on the wall and Dallas will be in essentially the same boat they were in with D Law this year.

Comes down to this:

If Dallas wants Dak as their QB— they will be paying him 30 mil + per year for his services.

Only way he makes less is if he craters this year, but that doesn’t seem likely.

The Cowboys are only in a "precarious situation" if they allow themselves to be pigeonholed into it. They don't have to be. There is no one who can order Dallas to sign Dak to an exorbitant contract, save for the Cowboys themselves. If they want to let Dak walk, they can. If they want to low-ball him to a low contract and dare him to sign elsewhere, they can. Dak is replaceable.

We need to stop this NFL trend of team finances being held hostage by one marquee QB who eats up a disproportionately large amount of the cap.
Replaceable by who? Fans like to say this, but there aren’t even enough quality QBs for the 32 teams, so clearly it’s not that easy to find them. Even if the Cowboys had a top 10 draft pick in 2020 (they won’t) the odds of getting an EJ Manuel or RG III or Jake Locker or Blaine Gabbert is higher than getting a Pat Mahomes or Jerod Goff.

Wonder if he hurt himself signing his new contract?

What would this contract have been if he had won a playoff game?

That contract was wild. It was like the long term lottery payout. Have they quit paying him yet?

No, after this year payout which has already taken place think he has one or 2 more installments.

Edit, just Google him and they on July 1st till 2035 he will get close to $2M. H--- this guy has not suited up since the mid 90's. Wow! Everyone should be trying to get his attorney.

2035. 1.19m$ every July 1st:

The Mets owed Bonilla $5.9 million for the 2000 season and no longer wanted him. So the club negotiated with Gilbert to attach an 8 percent annual interest rate to that money. With the clock starting in 2000, that adds up to $29.8 million. The first installment of the payout came on July 1, 2011, and the Mets will pay their sixth installment on Friday.

Nice post although I do believe there are other factors and things considered. The supposed hometown discount Wentz gave is really all that. Factor into Wentz deal his injury history and not just his NFL injury history but his college injury history. Odds are that he will end up sitting games every year due to some injury and if another ACL type it could end his career depending which knee it is. Wentz isn't dumb because getting $100 million plus in guarantee's means he is set. What if he suffered another injury this season, do you think Eagles give this type of contract, doubtful. And how many games has Dak missed or been injuried enough not to play. As to talent, it is in the eye of the beholder. Most fans are going by how high the pick is so Wentz must be better.

So is Brady a lousy QB, was Staubach a lousy QB, was Ryan Leaf a great QB and is Eli Manning better than Wentz? Do not give me that Wentz led the Eagles to a Super Bowl because any football person with any knowledge will tell you it was Foles who the team rallied around. Will Dak be compared to Wentz, he sure will on every game and so far that is Wentz 2 and Dak 3. The same comparison had fans in the air over Morton vs Staubach, Aikman vs Walsh internally as well as those who thought Dallas should have drafted this Qb or that Qb. What would Dallas look like if the draft that we got Dak would have been Lynch or the kid from Michigan St.?

What will Dak eventually sign for is still very much up in the air although I am sure it will be done before the start of the season. Will he become the highest paid, maybe in total dollars but just like Wentz contract, it means nothing except for the guarantee money. That is what anyone should be worried about. Depending on how the structure of the contract is, it will not prevent Dallas from being aggressive in free agency although I would ask when in the last 5 years has Dallas been aggressive in free agency because it appears that ship sailed a long time ago. As to resigning players, they will resign Dak, Zeke, Cooper, Jones, Smith and maybe one or two more this year and next, so who else.

And check out the net about the new CBA, most of the experts believe the cap is going to rise by 25 to 50 percent especially due to the new TV contract money and the influx of gambling dollars. Just don't see resigning the guys they want to keep as a problem. Now resigning the fans want to keep is a whole other ballgame.

1000%.......some fans seem to think finding an NFL franchise QB is simple and easy. Not to mention, you're throwing away all time and resources invested in Dak and going back to square one.

Some NFL players would be better in the long run with a contract like that. Amazing how many of them end up broke.
