Ed Werder breaks down the WR situation in Dallas

Posted by DCFanatic at 7/8/2008 5:50 PM and is filed under Player Info,Cowboys News

Werder joined Brady Tinker and Nate Newton on The Michael Irvin Show today to talk about the WR situation in Dallas..

Werder talks Cowboys WR issues

I do want Terry Glenn to play for the Cowboys, but I can't lie and say I think he's going to be healthy for 16 games even if he agrees to the injury waiver.

Austin and Hurd. I think Hurd wins that battle and he can be an effective, but not explosive third WR. Austin always seems to be on the brink of something, but then nothing happens.

Trade for Roy Williams, Anquan Boldin or Chad Johnson. The more time passes the more I think it becomes less likely a trade gets done for any of them.

As for Patrick Crayton being the #2. It pretty much worked well last season and T.O. and Witten are going to get their touches so it's not like there is a whole lot more balls to go around.

This WR situation just doesn't worry me as much as it worries some people.

Good post, thanks. People got to chill with the whole WR thing.

How can you say that Austin was always on the brink of breaking out and then disappearing?

He was a UFA and is in his third season. He first got playing time at WR at the end of last season and showed up making plays. You knew he was on the field.

I mean what do you expect? Him to be Chad Johnson in his second year?

Dude is displaying hands this offseason and if that translates onto gameday watch out.

We can do better than Crayton as a #2 receiver. With as many double teams as T.O. gets and Witten often being covered by corners, the most you can get out of Crayton was 50 receptions and 697 yards? Not even to mention the fact that over 1/4 of those yards came from one game(STL). He doesnt get open consistently enough.

No big leap there. People talk about having 50% or 75% Glenn, but more accurately, he'll either be able to play or he won't.

Austin and Hurd. I think Hurd wins that battle and he can be an effective, but not explosive third WR. Austin always seems to be on the brink of something, but then nothing happens.

With his speed, it would be better if Austin 'won'. But one highlight catch doesn't mean he's arrived yet.

Trade for Roy Williams, Anquan Boldin or Chad Johnson. The more time passes the more I think it becomes less likely a trade gets done for any of them.

I would agree here. I can't see how it doesn't look like giving up on the season if the Lions, Cards, or Bengals trade away a top receiver.

As for Patrick Crayton being the #2. It pretty much worked well last season and T.O. and Witten are going to get their touches so it's not like there is a whole lot more balls to go around.

"Pretty much worked well." There's an enthusiastic point! Crayton was a decent third option in the passing game, but not a threat to opposing defenses. Getting more speed on the field certainly wouldn't be a bad thing.

This WR situation just doesn't worry me as much as it worries some people.

It worries me!

When Owens went down, the offense went with him. If he's lost for any period of time, the results will be similar. Others receivers had the chance to 'step up' and none did. Owens is the 'big dog' and everyone else is a role player.

Crayton did not start at the #2 spot by design last year, and he shouldn't this year either. He should be where he's supposed to be - at the #3 position.

Nothing can derail this team's Super Bowl hopes quicker than an injury to Owens, because the passing game will go with him.

I will give you two examples.

I thought with his size and speed that at some point last season he would get on the field in place of Sam Hurd so he could stretch the field. I do not remember that happening.

The Skins game. He just showed up. He did show the ability to get deep, but he didn't catch anything deep. Then when he did get an opportunity to catch a few TD passes he literall dropped the ball.

I don't think he should be Chad Johnson by now. But if his ''size, speed, potential and whatever else you wanna say he has going for him' are really all that and a bag of chips then why couldn't he beat out Sam Hurd for the #3 job at some point last season.

I think Austin could be the next Alexander Wright.

I agree with Ed "homer" Werder.

I was bitterly disappointed when Jerra did not go off big time for a WR in the draft and when a trade did not materialize.

But the more I think about it, the more ah think Jerra has got to hold the line on a position that might turn out to be low-priority. For all his faults, Crayton is serviceable.
Most important, the Cowboys are well stocked with T.O. and Witten and possibly with a felix or choice coming out of the backfield. (Just kidding about choice.)
Hail, ever body wanted a "wow" WR but in reality it's low priority.

HAVING SAID THAT:

I'd feel better having a RW around if injuries struck our WR corps.
Also, true, there are just so many balls to go around. One actually.
But a tandem that has T.O. on one side and RW on the other, S-T-R-E-T-C-H-E-S the field.
A tandem with T.O. and Crayton makes it an obvious target selection.

I must go now. All this genius that pours out of me has been exhausting.

Those 150 yard games really skew your averages and make your WRs look better than they really are. Another thing that'll make a WR look good on paper is catching a lot of touchdowns.

does every team in the league have Jason Witten too?

there's only so many catches to go around when you have Owens as 1A and Witten as 1B

He might be another Alex Wright, but he was a rookie free agent and not the top pick of the 2nd rd...so that wouldnt be so bad

your also forgetting he had some PT vs the Packers, had a couple very significant plays in that game too...they couldnt cover him deep

people are making way too much out of a couple dropped balls...he hardly got any reps and didnt get that many chances...by all accounts he has gotten alot of reps this offseason and seems to be catching the ball well...he has a rare size/speed combination and shows that he does have the ability to get open and run routes...he isnt just a fast guy on the field with no other attributes.

Yep, nothing to worry about at WR.

We saw how unstoppable our O was after TO went down with injury.

OK, before everyone starts passing around the Kool Aid, remember that the Boys had the No. 4 passing offense in the entire league last year, even without Glenn. Granted, T.O. and Witten accounted for 177 of the receptions, but the other half went to other receiving options led by Crayton (50), Barber (44) and JuJo (23). Felix, IMHO, will out-produce JuJo in the passing game because that's sorta his bread and butter.

I know it's way too early to talk about this, especially given his current status, but I can see some situations where Adam Jones is split out wide to stretch the field. That doesn't mean they will throw to him, but it will keep a secondary honest.

Another player we're forgetting about that could have a pretty good impact is Martellus Bennett. I've read the same articles about how he's having trouble picking up the playbook, but what rookie doesn't? Like he said, all he had to do was show up at A&M and let his athletic ability take over. Now they are asking him to do things he's never done before, mainly with the blocking schemes. But, he does have serious skills (led A&M in receptions last year on a run-oriented team). Amendola is another option, but Bennett, IMO, has a more solidified spot on the team being a 2nd round draft pick than a URFA.

I'm not as down on our WR corps. Would I have loved to get another big time WR via a trade? Certainly. But, unless someone gets dropped during TC, this is what we have ... and it wasn't all that bad last year. In fact, it was better than 28 other WR corps in the league.

Im sure being the 3rd or 4th look on every pass play doesn't have much to do with that either.

With his frame, hands and leaping ability, he should be a pretty good target inside the red zone. Should be fun to watch.

I'll wait for him to pass Curtis on the depth chart first.

Crayton is what he is.

A 7th round draft pick who has developed into a good #3 receiver.

He benefits from the attention paid to the talent around him.
