ESPN's Ed Werder reports general managers around the league "heard a rumor" the Cowboys would trade second-year LG La'El Collins for defensive end help.

Werder asked a Cowboys source about the rumor, and he replied, "That's stupid." It's not all that far-fetched, however. The Cowboys have OG Ronald Leary as depth, and he's been an above-average 35-game starter for Dallas in the past. He made 31 starts from 2013-2014. Collins was a first-round talent who went undrafted last year, but took over as the starter Week 3. Collins was Pro Football Focus' No. 53 guard out of 82 qualifiers, struggling both as a run and pass blocker.
Cowboys are denying it.

The only way I could see this happening is if they aren't convinced that they'll be able to keep Collins, Frederick, and Martin, since all are going to be up for a contract in yhe next couple of years.

Edit: I would lose my **** if they did this, unless we're getting back a young star like Ziggy Ansah, or someone of that caliber and age. But who the hell would trade away a young pass rushing star for an OG who's still trying to figure it out...

Pointless. Why trade Collins when Learys contract is up next season?

So you lose two dominant LGs in one season. Brilliant!!!

Is he?

He is a fantastic young player, however, how much better is the whole OL with Collins (vs Leary) vs the potentially huge impact of bringing a good pass rusher in.

I love Collins and don't want to lose him, however, I wonder if having Collins in over Leary is really a case of diminishing returns and/or an embarrassment of riches.

Superbowls are won typically based on teams being good across the board, and if the Cowboys give up a good OL to get a good pass-rusher, I suspect the upside <could> outweigh the downside.

BTW, I may not believe anything I wrote above, however, I am attempting to work out whether there is a valid justification for trading Collins. I think there may be.

IF ( and that is a big IF) a trade happens, what DE would we trade for or be a fair even trade?

I agree to some extent, but you dont trade a guy who showed flashes of brilliance last season. You trade Leary, the guy with the knee that could go any day, and who teams covet. Also the one who is a FA next year. Only way i give up Collins is if someone is giving me a young stud Pass Rusher. Im not trading Collins for for anything less than that, and a pick.

No, it wouldn't. He's a guard, the most replaceable player on a team.

To a team with a bad offensive line, he's more than just a guard, and if you could turn that into a significant defensive player, you ABSOLUTELY do it. But it would have to be a significant player with a contract that allows Dallas control.

The only way I could dream of supporting this fabricated pos of a story is if we could get a DL player of equal value. Good look figuring out who is in position to lose a player like that.
