Gargano: Westbrook Wants $30 Million From Eagles

Forget Lito Sheppard. Anthony Gargano says the Philadelphia Eagles and star running back Brian Westbrook are at least $15 million apart in contract talks.

Westbrook is expected to report to Eagles' training camp at Lehigh University this week, but he has a new agent and wants to be paid as much as Chargers' star LaDanien Tomlinson, said Gargano on an interview on "Good Day Philadelphia."

Westbrook is the Eagles' top player and arguably the best all-around running back in the NFL.

But he has a history of injuries, which led the Eagles to drag out Westbrook's most recent contract.

Gargano said the Eagles were offering $15 million in guaranteed money to Westbrook, while his agent was asking for $30 million.

Also, Gargano said that the Eagles were in the last-minute bidding fir defensive end Jason Taylor, who was traded to the Commanders on Sunday night.

The Dolphins reportedly wanted a second round and fifth round draft pick from the Eagles, who balked at the offer.

Taylor was send to Washington for a second round and fifth round draft pick from the Commanders.

I see a holdout coming!

I'm also glad the Eagles didn't get Taylor.

I can't understand how anyone could balk at paying Westbrook. Yes, he has a history of injuries but he's also had 2 straight years with 300+ touches. Omigod, we used our RB too much and he got hurt! Duh.

I would have preferred them to get Taylor and not be able to afford Westbrook! :laugh2:

Didn't I hear two years ago Wesbrook has a degenerate Knee condition? If so he's on a down hill slide. i.e, Glenn

Actually that would be the point the Eagles would make. We give you over 300 touches and you can't stay healthy, so why are we going to pay you 30 million to get 300 touches and be hurt all the time? Thats a big waste of money. Don't ya think?

We have now signed on to pay TO over $50M in total and I don't think he has ever played a complete season. Was he worth it? I think so!

do you really want me to smash that comparison into pieces?

BTW T.O played a full 17 games in 2006

300 touches is a lot to ask of any running back in today's NFL.

He's missed two games over the last two years - that's hardly "can't stay healthy" - you simply cannot have your #1 rusher also lead the team in receptions and expect a better outcome than that. That's an elite performance and he's right to ask for a ton of cash.

Of course, with any team it is a two-way street. You want to get the most out of your starting RB, then get a backup who can carry some of the load. The Eagles had Buckhalter run the ball 62 times last year and 83 times the year before that. Nearly 20% of those runs were in the two games that Westbrook missed.

Smash it. As for full season, lets take a look at TOs games played. (regular season)

  1. 1996: 16
  2. 1997: 16
  3. 1998: 16
  4. 1999: 14
  5. 2000: 14
  6. 2001: 16
  7. 2002: 14
  8. 2003: 15
  9. 2004: 14
  10. 2005: 7
  11. 2006: 16
  12. 2007: 15

TO has missed 19 games in 12 seasons. 19 games / 12 season is 1.58 games missed per season.

Westbrook has missed 11 games in six seasons. 11 games / 6 seasons is 1.83 games missed per season.

That amounts to about 1 quarter (15 minutes!) of a game per season difference.

Over the last four years, Westbrook has averaged almost (6,768 / 4) 1,700 all purpose yards per season and averaged (39/4) 9.75 TDs per season.

I'm not sure how you are going to smash it. Westbrook misses about the same amount of time as TO overall and is pretty damn productive!

He's also been listed as "questionable" on the injury list every week as well.

Sure-he's proven his critics wrong the last 2 years by showing solid durability. But his knees are nonetheless a ticking time bomb. Alot like Terry Glenn-he may have showed durability for years on that chronic knee, but it was sooner or later before it would break down.

I think you have to remove the 2005 season with the Eagles from your argument where you're trying to make it seem like Westbrook hardly misses more than T.O.

T.O. didn't miss those games due to injury. He missed them because the Eagles were stupid. So without that bs you can see that the only time TO has missed significant time in his entire career was when the team deactivated him. Not because of injuries.

So he's been listed as questionable. Last year he was third in the NFL in rushing yards. He lead all NFL running backs with 90 receptions. There is nothing questionable about his productivity.

not to mention doesn't Brady turn up as questionable or probable every single week over the last 2-3 years?

I hardly take all those injury lists as 100% truthful.

Brady practices(in full). However-Westbrook has missed a good chunk of practice time the last 2 years.

No, but this is more comparison numbers. The Eagles threw out Michael Turner type numbers. Westbrook's people countered with LT numbers. Most folks on this board would agree that Westbrook is worth a hell of a lot more than Turner and worth less than LT (who broke down at the end of last year in the playoffs)

Me, I think his value is far closer to LT than to MT.
