1. Drew Pearson being tackled by the collar on the play that would have put Dallas into SB XVI. I know in my heart that Dallas would have beaten the Bengals in Pontiac. As was said earlier, Danny would not be thought of as he is today.

A number of you have cited this, so I'll torture you by posting the vid link once again. Hello, horsecollar.

1) How about we run a draw to Dorsett? After the catch, we get the ball and White hits Pearson on a 30 yard play to the 49ers 45 yard line. We had one timeout 35 seconds and the leagues best kicker. Instead of running the pass play White fumbles on, Landry crosses up the 49ers with a draw to Dorsett.
That drive and the game ends on a Septein 45 yard FG attempt. Win or lose, I could've lived with that ending better.

I think it would have worked. But even if Tony only gained a few yards, you still had time to try at least two more passes and then try the long field goal on 4th down. I watched that game again the other night and it is sad how bad Kurt Petersen got pancaked by the 49er d-lineman on the play when Danny fumbled. Kurt just flat got mis-used:(

1) Duane Thomas' non-fumble in Supe V. We cash in there and the game is all but over.
2) The Catch. But this play happened on third down. How do we know they wouldn't have scored on the next play? Or are we assuming that Everson picked the pass off?

add another one for "The Catch" and one for the Smith drop

Wanted to go with Romo's bobble, but then we don't get to see TO cry and Bill doesn't leave.

Crayton's drop still stings too for a guy with the teams "Best Hands."

1. I am going to start with Jackie Smith dropping the sure touchdown from Staubach in Super Bowl XIII.

2. I was going to say Romo bobble, but I remember Novacek getting stopped inside the 1 yard line as time expired against Cleveland in 1994 that made me go %%$#^%^&%& nuts.

1. The Catch
2. Ice Bowl run up the middle

Great thread. I was 6 years old at the time of The Catch and that was my first time being a Cowboy fan and I do remember us getting in good position to win the game only to see us fumble the very next day. I cried so much and my mom was trying to calm me down. It hurt so bad and I was only 6 at that time. I am so glad we got payback on the Niners in 92.

With as close as we were to so many crutial game breakers, it's a wonder we don't have more Lombardys to show for it.

At least were not the lowly Eagles. They would have to change the entire outcome of a game to pull off a critical win. :D

With just a couple more breaks against the Packers and the Trophy would have been called the Landry.

1. Danny White's fumble after "The Catch."

2. Deion sanders interference against Michael Irvin at the 6-yard line in the 1994 NFC Championship game.

"Of your 5 children, which two would you most want to save?"

Contenders:

Ice Bowl
Super Bowl V
Super Bowl XIII
Jan 1982 NFC Championship Game
Jan 1995 NFC Championship Game

... For me personally, as a kid, the Ice Bowl just wasn't as big as the other 5 games.

... Super Bowl V would have been won if not for the blown fumble recovery call. It was a very painful loss. Still, Landry had such a tough time deciding between Morton and Staubach back in those days. If Morton wins Super Bowl V, maybe Landry looks at Morton v. Staubach differently, and Staubach never quite gets the same opportunity ....

Super Bowl XIII is a clear choice for me. If the Cowboys win that close game, the 1970's are remembered differently and a few more very deserving Cowboys are in the Hall of Fame. ... a Jackie Smith catch doesn't lock that game up, but that's one of the plays I'd pick.

As for the other game, it is a very difficult choice. For me, it comes down to this: The early 1980's Cowboys needed their NFC Championship win more than the 1990's Cowboys needed theirs (the 1990's Cowboys were the team of the 90's even with that loss). So I'll go with the Jan 1982 NFC Championship game. ... let Dwight Clark make his catch, but let's have the Cowboys score a last second touchdown afterwards.

naturally the jackie Smith play but also in the same game was a play where Cliff Harris was poised to tackle Franco Harris butthe ref set a pick for Franco and he ran for like 35 yards. It was a key play and it really frustrated me.

I also think of the personal foulon Barry Switzer in the championship game they lost to SF when he came on the field to argue

Those 2 plays get reversed and we might have 2 more Lombardi's.

If someone wanted to play a bankshot in this thread, Staubach's final playoff game - a loss to the Rams - is a candidate. The Cowboys were the better team, but the Rams team hit a couple of long passes and won. It was against this weak Rams team that a past-their-prime Steelers team won their final Super Bowl.

Many believed (and Tex Schramm often said) that this aging Steelers team would have lost to the Cowboys. Staubach would have retired a Super Bowl Champion and Bradshaw's Steelers would have been held to three SB wins. That would have been pretty great.

Oh well ....

- Don't know if this qualifies, but Rocket Ismail staying in the NFL draft instead of going to the CFL. Dallas wanted to pick him #1 instead of Russell Maryland. I always wondered what our offense would have looked like with Rocket, Irvin and Novacek as lined up in their primes and it seemed that Irvin never had a consistant WR threat lined up on the opposite side. Aside from a couple of memorable games, Alvin Harper had a tendancy to drop balls and disappear. Kevin Williams was a step lower. It seemed like our D-Line was deep enough that it could have withstood passing over Maryland.

- The Irvin catch in Philly that ended his career. Watching him get carted off amongst the cheers of those classless jerks was hard to take.

We had 3 turnovers against the 49ers in our 3rd straight NFC title game.

I would take 2 of those away = 3 straight... maybe 4 straight SB wins.... either unprecidented.
