Lions | Two key wide receivers not impressing the coaching staff
Thu, 6 Apr 2006 21:08:56 -0700

Tom Kowalski, of mlive.com, reports just three short weeks into the Detroit Lions offseason conditioning program, sources said WRs Charles Rogers and Mike Williams have not impressed the new coaching staff. Rogers has been attending the workouts but the coaches have been underwhelmed by his attitude and focus. Rogers alleged reputation for being a partier remains. Williams didn't show up for any of the workouts last week. His agent said he left because of a "family matter.'' Williams is reportedly out of shape and overweight. Both wide receivers will need to improve their focus, or they could find themselves battling for a roster spot.

I think Rogers is history. And good riddance! Talk about flushing your career down the drain.....

And some of us here wanted Mike Williams. I'm glad BP loves LB's.

Wonder if this is a result of his environment. Just curious b/c it see he went to a team where all the WR's just didn't care so "maybe" he fell into that trap. I am not trying to excuse him just wondering.

Some of us still do. I would take either guy, reasonably of course, as a third WR option in our offense. TO, Glenn and either one of these two would be a pretty difficult match up for opposing defenses.

It's a risk reward deal, no question but the upside on a deal like that would be huge. JMO.

Marty Mornhinweg (fired)

Charles Rogers (bust)

Joey Harrington (bust)

Steve Mariucci (fired)

Mike Williams (struggling)

... and GM Matt "Mongo" Millen still has a job.

Could be, but pretty much if you watched him a few games in College, Mike Williams wasn't fast enough to be great WR in NFL. He was pretty much almost a Keyshaun Clone, probably even little slower.

Heck Mike Mayock of NFL network was telling anyone who would listen, he wouldn't be a good WR in NFL since he seems to lack any seperation speed.

Now having said, even I am surprised at his alleged behaviour. But it has been said, detroit suffers from that type of behaviour from most of its players. No wonder every QB there goes to NFL graveyard.

I dont think he can play WR at this point...I think his best option now is for someone to make him into a receving only TE type...there's been a few players who made that type move and were successful, maybe he can too...I think Shannon Sharpe was a WR in college as well

Mind you I did not post a single word about bringing Harrington here to Dallas when those rumors were floating around. I could care less if Harrington were to come to Dallas or not.

The thing though that stands out in mind are many of those who "point" to all the talent Joey has been surrounder with.

Would that talent be:

1. WR Charles Rogers - 3 seasons - 9 career NFL starts - 36 catches 440 yards - 4TDs

2. WR Roy Williams - 2 seasons - 23 career NFL starts - 99 catches 1504 yards - 16 TDs

3. Mike Williams - Rookie - 4 career NFL game starts - 29 catches 350 yards - 1 TD

4. Kevin Jones - 2 Seasons - 27 Career starts - 1797 yards - 10 TDs

Charles Rogers is a flat out bust at this point.

Roy Williams looks solid, but last year was only his second year in the league. Most WRs do not tear it up in the NFL until a few seasons into the league.

Who knows what to make of Mike Williams and his future, but it is certain that he was a rookie last year and rookie who did not do to well for that matter.

Kevin Jones is a nice player, but to this point he is not exactly a world beater. 186 rushes for 664 yards, 3.6 yards per carry and 5 TDs last year.

Millen's got pictures of the Ford family in a massive orgy.

Hmmm...

Told ya so.

I was one of the only ones here that wasn't very high on Williams last year.

You can put it in stone: Slow WRs, no matter how big they are, almost never make it big. ;)

Yeah Millen is a moron, but the Lions biggest problem is the buffoon who owns them in William Clay Ford. When a franchise has 1 playoff win in the last 50 years or whatever it is, I think you have to point the finger at the owner who continues to hire incompetent coaches and GM's and then allows them to stay on even when it's obvious they are useless.

Good point. I said back during the draft that he's the "next Mikhael Ricks." :laugh2:
