What a Win or Loss Tells Us

A win:

We are at the very least on 8-8sville train again - able to beat the lesser teams. And with hope of growing beyond that with a win or two against the winning teams. Gone will be the dire 3-13 and first-pick-of-the-draft predictions spouted so often here and elsewhere. Two straight wins on the road is no small feat in the NFL regardless of opponent. This teams toughness will be declared and optimism will abound.

A loss:

Doesn't mean the end of the season by any means but certainly lays the track for a rough road ahead as the schedule doesn't get any easier. It puts us (at least temporarily) in the lower echelon of the league.

I can't wait for this game and what it will tell us.

If we lose to the freaking Rams, we will be a 5 or 6 win team max this year

If we lose to the Rams, it will be the same song and dance for this team for many years now -- relaxing and/or letting our guard down against a poor team after a win.

At this point, we cannot simply look at wins or losses to supply us the definitoin of this team. But we can derive some conclusions from how they win or lose. First and foremost, we as fans need to forget who the Rams were and have been and learn to accept this is a different team and could very well be considered great by seasons end. Consider Kansas City at this same time last year. They turned out to be better than what anyone was willing to believe. The same could be true of the Rams.

Having said that, and getting back to the "how" - if the Cowboys can dominate possession and the ground in much the same way they did the Titans, we may be able to start pointing to a trend. Transversely, if they lose as a result of not being able to get out of their own away, alla game one againts the 49ers, it wouldn't hurt to dial back your expectations for the year.

Playoff teams don't lose to the Rams. This is also the easiest game of the year for us.

Maybe

The Rams did beat 3 playoff teams last year.

The Dallas Cowboys are in no position to look down on anyone--especially when that team is at home.

If we can't beat a fairly bad team starting its second or third string QB, it doesn't bode well for the season. This is a game a decent team has to win.

Win and we suck because we didn't win by enough. Lose and we suck more. If you fall into the minority who actually gets excited or entertained if we win please post a lot next week. The CZ always needs as many positive posts as we can get.

Of course they do. Playoff teams lose to teams like the Rams all the time. It's amazing to me how people can watch the NFL and not realize that.

What good teams don't do is get blown out by bad teams. When they lose to bad teams, the games are close. Not always, but almost always.

If the Cowboys blow out the Rams or get blown out by them, we'll learn something about how good or bad we might be. If it's a close game one way or the other, we won't learn anything except our new record. The new record will tell us a lot about our playoff chances, but not so much about the quality of the team.

Disagree. 1-2 or 2-1. Looks like 8-8 in the future.

A loss is way more telling than a win in this game. Everyone thought we would be 2-2 after 4 games. Well to do that, the Rams game needs to be a win. No way should we drop a game to a team who had almost 40 hung on them by Minnesota and eeked out a win against Tampa. Who is also playing a 3rd string QB and missing their best offensive player in Austin.

A win will just be business as usual and par for the course.

People underestimate the impact of that back:back road game effect. This is a game we should win fairly handily, but I think it's a toss up tomorrow. If we do handle them, using the OL, especially, I'll be fairly impressed.

Very true, imho. This season promises to be a tough challenge with the tough schedule we're facing. The Rams are merely facing an evenly matched game, according to Las Vegas and it's at their place. I can't quite see where this game is anything to be taken lightly or for granted. They'll likely be stacking the line to thwart our running game Sunday. Let's hope Murray has similar success as he did last week vs. Tennessee. It'll also be interesting to see what Romo can manage to do in spite of a back that appears stubbornly determined to act up.

THIS.

Awhile back a member here posted some league stats showing how many instances clubs played consecutive road games vs how many times they won the 2nd of the 2 games. If my memory is correct the numbers were pretty astonishing. That 2nd game is brutal.

This is why I'll be happy even if we win an ugly nail biter today.
