Ideally Wilcox and Church are backups next year. Keith Davis and Jake Scott come to mind...

This guy's a bit of an enigma to me. He doesn't have much experience at the position and does flash ability but there are times where I think he's overwhelmed and might never get it.

Do you think he's a piece for the future or do we need two new safeties?

I think he is very talented and has gotten better the last half of the season.

I think he can play both Safety spots, but IMO he could be a decent FS but an elite SS who can be an inforcer in the box with great range and ball skills in coverage. I think he has All Pro potential there, but maybe top 15 Free Safety potential

Long term I keep JJ over Church. At least Wilcox has room to grow. This is as good as church will ever be and its not very good. Church needs to move to LB or move on

Agree.

People like to criticize players that appear to fail on a big play and people tend to expand that 1 play to define a complete game.

I saw a stat that Wilcox has 2 missed tackles in the past 5 games.

For not so much experience he's doing good, like to see him bring down ball carriers and getting their face

Well IMO, we can let Wilcox try to develop, but we need a FS and if that means Church goes to the bench, fine.

Neither are a FS, and its easy to see. Do we trust Wilcox or Church to come down on a WR??

We have found guys for the DL, but never at safety. We had to draft high to get our OL problem corrected. We might have to do that at safety, if he is the BPA.

If Devin McCourty wasn't headed for a franchise tag with the Pats I'd say let's go get ourselves that play-making ball-hawk free safety we want in free agency. I have no other names for you in free agency - anybody?

A buddy of mine who is a Dead skin fan called him out. Called him a dirty player. Made me smile.

They do need a developmental Safety with high upside. They don't have much behind Wilcox and Church right now.

As to Church and Wilcox themselves, if the players around them improve, they'll improve. Some of the things that people say are bad angles by the Safeties are actually failures by surrounding players. A Safety has to base his "angles" on what LBs and other players should do in front of them. If a LB or other player fails, then it causes an offensive player to be running free where they shouldn't and causes the Safety to then be in a bad position.

I like him. The bad angles and missed assignments can be coached and he will
Learn and get better. The way he plays the aggressiveness and trying to completely run theough people can't be taught- all good instincts and heart. He'll need to get better to stick, I'm hoping he does.

On a related side note, Jakar Hamilton was cut today. This guy has to be one of the biggest disappointments this year, mainly because if you go back you will see other players like Witten expecting him to be the most improved player this year. He worked with Deion in the off-season and everything looked thumbs up for a great year. Dude hardly played!!

I like the guy. He is still a bit raw, but with a 3rd season, I think he's really going to improve.

With that said, it won't hurt my feelings if the Cowboys start looking at that position for some competition for JJ.

Yes, he was only active for 1 game.

In Wilcox' defense, how many splash plays have occurred against this defense this season that were for coverage lapses on his part? I don't count many personally. In years past this has been a cringe-worthy stat at free safety.

IMO that's still Wilcox. He's definitely a far better athlete than Church, but he's been bumped around positions through college and now the pro's, and to me, last year he was caught "thinking" too much, less so this year. At this level your position needs to be instinctual and he is definitely not there yet.

Church needs to be upgraded, especially if we are sticking with Cover 2.. He's Keith Killa Davis v2.0 - i.e. a try hard guy and good tackler, bit not much else.

I like what he brings and I attribute the mistakes to his lack of experience playing the position....his positives out-weigh the negatives right now...
