Good pass rushers don't typically make it to the trade market especially for a reasonable fee.

Why did we not make a play for Julius Peppers? Was it because he would have been too closely?

With the Skins sucking so bad, I wonder if they would part with Orakpo for something reasonable. Likely his last year in Washington. I'm not saying we should sign him long term. It would be like in MLB -- the player's brought in for the postseason run.

We'd give maybe a 4th for the remainder of the season. Maybe a conditional pick if he tears it up. Has only half a sack this year but near or at double digits in 4 of the past 5 years. He lost most of 2012 to injury. Was better as a DE earlier in his career.

He signed a 1-yr deal for $11.5M fully guaranteed. Trade deadline is Oct 28. Our first game with Washington is the 27th and the last is the last game of the season, so he would not play a meaningful game against the Skins this year. That's half the season means we're picking up his contract for approx. half the value.

Give Garrett the opportunity to acquit himself admirably before affording him the honor of being re-signed to a generous contract extension. After all, he's admittedly been serving in an on-the-job training capacity.

It might well be fitting to wait until the team has at least competed in the playoffs before granting such a commitment to a head coach who has simply contributed a questionable record at this somewhat early juncture in his career. I see no real need to rush things just yet.

I admire Garrett's ability to inspire his charges and take the team to better direction but there's undoubtedly much to be said for waiting for the most appropriate time to bestow such a significant and far-reaching commitment.

He would have to play safety since he can no longer play corner and has been at the safety position for three years. A 6th for a 38 year old is still too much. Maybe a 7th.

IIRC we already traded our 6th anyway for Rolondo McClain and got a 7th in return.

this isn't bold, but how about stop listening to faulk? he hasn't been relevant since the day he took off his jersey the last time....

...if relatively healthy the rest of the way, no bold moves are needed...in the last several seasons, we have been decimated (especially on D) with injuries...but, this season, while there are injuries, we also have A LOT of guys coming back within the next 4 to 6 weeks without trading assets for them

stand pat please

Only bold moves I want to see are no bold moves. 1 Get Murray, Dez and McClain signed. 2 do not go out and get high priced FA seldom works for us, look for the mid range FA and 3 focus on the draft. Seems anytime we try to make a big splash we end up just getting wet.

Perfect perfect perfect

ha ha. At least throw in Dexter Coakley along with your 4th rounder for Orakpo.

what kind of wiggle room does this team have to make a splash on anything? They're digging themselves out of cap hell and the depth is paper thin. Who can they trade without leaving a gaping hole? NOBODY! I guess they could trade away a future draft pick,,, or maybe Jeff Fisher would trade us one of his D-Linemen if we promise to go easy on them next time... :p

The Dallas Cowboys have made it through the first four games of the NFL season, and at 3-1, are in better shape than most of us expected. But Marshall Faulk wants to remind us that you can never stand pat in the NFL. Here is this week's GMC Playbook question.

The Cowboys have already made some bold and decisive moves this season. A couple that spring to mind are signing Rolando McClain and going all in on the running game. So far, things are working out pretty well. But there is a lot of football to play yet, and you always want to be taking steps to make things better.

On the field, there really isn't a lot that needs to be changed at this point. Tony Romo looks to be returning to the top of his game. DeMarco Murray is simply in full beast mode. Dez Bryant is still doing Dez things, including helping pave the way for Murray. The defense, while still very much a work in progress, is at least showing signs that it can provide enough resistance to the other team to help the offense stay ahead on the scoreboard. And special teams seem to be holding up their end of the bargain quite well.

So what bold, even daring move could the team make? Well, at the coaching level, nothing comes immediately to mind. There are certainly no big, splashy personnel moves that come to mind, especially for a team that has a bit over $5 million in cap space. The plan in all three phases of the game seems pretty solid and not in need of anything major.

By process of elimination, that takes us to the owner and general manager, Jerry Jones. Here is a man who has never shied away from the bold and decisive move. And recently, there was word that he may be considering something that fits this concept almost perfectly.

He should continue making bold moves like the one where he didn't draft Manziel.

May not be considered a bold move, But what I would like to see them do is re-sign all the coordinators. Defensive, offensive, O-line etc. I feel like Garrett has finally got the right blend of coaches behind him now - lock them all up.

Perhaps for the offensive staff. Not certain the defensive side is untouchable, especially at defensive back.

Don't think they are either. Thinking more about just Callahan - if we can convince him to stay. Marinelli and Linehan. (Sp) Eberflus also seems like a keeper. Kinda got some good people around Garrett now - lets continue "the process" ...
Pope - TE's coach also looks good at this stage.
If we are actually gonna keep Garrett, having better coaches around him helps to make it easier, and this year it feels much of a better blend.

True if they continue as they are. I would not do a contract player or coach right now. Go out and earn it, a little hot seat never killed anyone. Heck Coughlin won a SB one of the seasons he started out on the hot seat.

I agree somewhat. But I would hate for us to lose ANY of our assistant coaches next season such as Callahan and possibly Henderson and Eberflus. If there is a way to extend any of their contracts right now, I would do it.

What an awful article- Extend the guy who costs us 2-3 games a year with terrible clock management/coaching decisions.

Very pleased with the Linehan and Pope additions. I think it is very noticeable how well the TEs not named Escobar are doing very well blocking. Witten is more aggressive than I have ever seen him and Hanna looks like a different player. Linehan has done a good job of tweaking things here and there, plus adjusting to what is happening in the game rather than panicking to the pass if things are not exactly going well.
