The Cowboys need a better plan at backup QB, but that plan may not necessarily involve a first-round pick.

In the NFL these days, there's an expectation that a QB drafted in the first round needs to be an immediate starter, and the numbers seem to bear this out. Of the 12 quarterbacks drafted with a Top 40 pick in the last four drafts, all but one were immediate starters for their teams in their rookie seasons.

The only exception was Johnny Manziel, who was certainly expected to be an immediate starter in Cleveland, but failed to do so for a number of reasons.

There were eight more QBs drafted over the last four years between the 40th and the 100th pick (top of 4th round). Only two of them were immediate starters, Russell Wilson in Seattle and Mike Glennon in Tampa Bay.

The following table summarizes the 20 QBs picked with a top 100 pick over the last four years

I agree in waiting till the 3rd round+ to draft a qb but that doesn't mean he'll develop eventually. Didn't work with the last qb we drafted in the 3rd.

If Lynch is there I say take him. We can get secondary help in FA without having to bust the bank particularly if we retain Claiborne and/or get Carr to reduce his salary.

Sign: Claiborne, Mincey, Jenkins, Hill, Hayden, Leary, Bernadeau

Rd 1 Paxton Lynch
Rd 2 Derrick Henry
Rd 3 Fast WR/SAM
Rd 4 Fast WR/SAM

QB Romo Lynch Moore
RB Henry DMC Dunbar
FB/TE Clutts Escobar Witten Swaim
OL Smith Leary Fred Martin LC Bernadeau Green
WR Dez TWill Beasley Fast WR Lucky
DL DLaw Crawford Hill Gregory Mincey Russell Irvin Hayden
LB Lee Hitchens SAM Smith Wilson Nzeocha Wilber
CB Scandrick Jenkins Claiborne Mitchell
S Jones Church Wilcox Heath

It's far from perfect but that is a very improved start.

I like three Prospects Lynch,Goff,Wentz. No idea whose really going to play in the NFL.
My guess is two of those three are gone before we draft. Dropping down too far trying to
get value opens up lots of other teams jumping in front of us. Also these three
it has been suggested aren't worth the high position at the top of the draft. Who knows?

Hackenberg maybe falls to the third?

If Jerry really wants a QB I would be surprised if we don't move up.

It is a crapshoot no matter what round you draft a QB. Everyone is assuming Jimmy Garoppolo will be good once he sees the field, but there is no guarantee that will be the case. The Patriots used a 3rd round pick to nab Ryan Mallett and let him develop. He is terrible. No matter which QB Dallas drafts many will think it is the wrong choice because the odds are low that any QB develops into a quality starter. There are so few quality starters in the league. Finding the next one is tough. You may think you like a prospect now, but give it a couple of years and your mind will change.

My first mock draft had similar.
Lynch or Goff at QB
Henry at RB
Josh Perry at LB
Braxton Miller at WR. He is projected as a 4th rounder as of now, and since he would be a bit of a project, having only 1 year at WR. And it takes most WR's 3 years to really get it in the NFL. He has versatility, can run, catch and pass as a 3rd string emergency QB type. And he is fast and quick.
Kind of what Jaguars do with Dennard Robinson.

Would a couple of 2nd round QB's look good now. Take out a Marty B and Escobar and we haven't lost anything.

Which is exactly why you don't draft a qb in the first just because it's a need pick. There has to be value there. If there is a qb available in the first that is WORTH the pick, sure pick him. Otherwise go BPA (according to the draft board).
