As others have said earlier, I'm interested in getting Romo's eventual replacement, not his backup.

1. If you want his replacement, pick him in the 1st round, assuming it's good value. Don't reach.

2. If you want a backup, go to rounds 3 or 4. And hope you get lucky that's he your eventual replacement.

I prefer option 1 myself.

His many of the Cowboys 8 Super Bowls and 2 prior NFL championships were started by a QB not taken in the 1st round?

Answer:

Only the 4 started by Roger Staubach, who would probably have been a #1 overall pick had it not been for his six year military commitment.

The others were started by 1st rounders Don Meredith, Craig Morton, and Troy Aikman.

How many Cowboy quarterbacks have been taken in the 1st round of the regular draft?

Answer:

The three listed above.

why are so many interested in Goff. I have seen him play several times and he is not impressive at all. I feel the same about Hackenberg, though he could be a better pro than college QB. PSU really doesn't have a great group of offensive weapons, and their OL is not what it used to be back in the Paterno era. I think Hogan is the guy we should target. I firmly believe he will be a late round steal for whatever team chooses him, especially if he is drafted to backup a current starter for a year or two.

Of course, Lynch in my favorite QB in the draft, and I like Wentz as my 2nd favorite.

I like three Prospects Lynch,Goff,Wentz. No idea whose really going to play in the NFL.
My guess is two of those three are gone before we draft. Dropping down too far trying to
get value opens up lots of other teams jumping in front of us. Also these three
it has been suggested aren't worth the high position at the top of the draft. Who knows?

I haven't watched Wentz and only a couple of games of Goff. I really really like Lynch though. I have no idea if he can read a pro style pass progression but the size, arm and accuracy are all pluses. What really encourages me is his pocket presence and ability to elude pressure while still keeping the play alive. He can freelance if he gets chased out too if he has to.

The Cowboys need a better plan at backup QB, but that plan may not necessarily involve a first-round pick.

In the NFL these days, there's an expectation that a QB drafted in the first round needs to be an immediate starter, and the numbers seem to bear this out. Of the 12 quarterbacks drafted with a Top 40 pick in the last four drafts, all but one were immediate starters for their teams in their rookie seasons.

The only exception was Johnny Manziel, who was certainly expected to be an immediate starter in Cleveland, but failed to do so for a number of reasons.

There were eight more QBs drafted over the last four years between the 40th and the 100th pick (top of 4th round). Only two of them were immediate starters, Russell Wilson in Seattle and Mike Glennon in Tampa Bay.

The following table summarizes the 20 QBs picked with a top 100 pick over the last four years

I could tell what the cowboys could learn from the patriots. But from a moral standpoint i can pass on it.

better never win a SB again then to fall on those lows the patriots have.
