We shouldn't wait. We should pick a QB in every round until we hit the jackpot.

Imagine if Jerry did that...I hope you are kidding.

Next few years we would be complaining about no depth to in linemen, backs, etc., because Jerry drafted a team of QBs to find the next Luck.

And what are we learning? How to draft a mediocre QB that will never win (minus Wilson obviously). Patriots got lucky are were able to flip the guys they drafted for picks, but they still haven't done crap in this league. If everyone is clamoring for a better backup next year drafting a mid round guy should be the worst option.

Oh a better system/coaching would help too....

As others have said earlier, I'm interested in getting Romo's eventual replacement, not his backup.

1. If you want his replacement, pick him in the 1st round, assuming it's good value. Don't reach.

2. If you want a backup, go to rounds 3 or 4. And hope you get lucky that's he your eventual replacement.

I prefer option 1 myself.

While we are learning from these teams about QB's, it wouldn't hurt to notice what hiring good coaches can do for a team.

The Cowboys need a better plan at backup QB, but that plan may not necessarily involve a first-round pick.

In the NFL these days, there's an expectation that a QB drafted in the first round needs to be an immediate starter, and the numbers seem to bear this out. Of the 12 quarterbacks drafted with a Top 40 pick in the last four drafts, all but one were immediate starters for their teams in their rookie seasons.

The only exception was Johnny Manziel, who was certainly expected to be an immediate starter in Cleveland, but failed to do so for a number of reasons.

There were eight more QBs drafted over the last four years between the 40th and the 100th pick (top of 4th round). Only two of them were immediate starters, Russell Wilson in Seattle and Mike Glennon in Tampa Bay.

The following table summarizes the 20 QBs picked with a top 100 pick over the last four years

this article is ridiculous.

the broncos and the saints both picked up established veterans.

the patriots had no idea that they were getting bledsoe's replacement in brady; he was a 6th round pick, not a 3rd or 4th, like this article suggests. their other qb's, cassell and mallet, have flamed out.

the seahawks did hedge their bets with wilson, but they didn't know what they had -- and their qb evaluation was so bad that they gave many millions to a career backup who had one fluke of a good game.

besides, just counting draft picks is meaningless. all those teams drafted linebackers and receivers, too, even though they already had starters plugged in. *everyone* is *always* trying to stock up on new players, at every position.

Most franchises draft skill and think they can coach a QB into greatness as long as he's intelligent.

I think that's a mistake.

Draft the guy whose personality can handle the job.

We can always give examples of past failures and successes.
If the QB falls to us in the first you give it your best. Position is way to important.

I say trade our entire draft to the colts for Andrew Luck. We could definitely use some Luck next year.:lmao2:

His many of the Cowboys 8 Super Bowls and 2 prior NFL championships were started by a QB not taken in the 1st round?

Answer:

Only the 4 started by Roger Staubach, who would probably have been a #1 overall pick had it not been for his six year military commitment.

The others were started by 1st rounders Don Meredith, Craig Morton, and Troy Aikman.

How many Cowboy quarterbacks have been taken in the 1st round of the regular draft?

Answer:

The three listed above.
