It didn't seem offensive at all.

I agree. I'm not a fan of Kornheiser, but it seemed to me like he was trying to make a self depricating joke about his lack of knowledge of Spanish, not making an offensive comment about Hispanics.

Before they went into a break they showed a scene of one of the eagles players getting some treatment on his back. The trainers were messaging his lower back and thigh and tony says something like his hands are too close for comfort or something like that. After he said it, Terico noticed it and tried to change the subject quickly.

Not my first mistake, undoubtedly won’t be my last, but a 100 percent apology.”

Well if he said it then...I thought he appologized much later in the game? Like after Dallas scored to get to 41 points and then they came back from the commercial break and he appologized for something he said. If it was for something they showed in the first half why'd he wait so long to appologize for it? I got the feeling it was something he said right before that break after the Cowboys got the final go ahead score.

Ahhh, thanks for this Ramp. I had no idea what they were talking about. I wonder why he waited until far later in the game to appologize for it?

I dont like Kornhole, but he did not say anything wrong, he was stricktly commenting on what the two hispanic commentators were saying. Its not racist or being a bigot to think that two guys speaking spanish are saying to each other "No one is going to catch him or could u pick up my dry cleaning"

Its Americas over sensative to certain things that made him apologize. I personally thought it was funny. I dont speak spanish so to me they could have been saying "Jerry picked the right dude from Arkansas"

He apologized before all the idiots got a chance to blow it out of purportion.

You're obviously not hispanic. You can't see how that would be offensive to say when the NFL spent all night trying to sell their product to Hispanics only to have an announcer say slip something like that in?

I always find it funny when someone not of a specific race tells them not to be offended by something.

I don't understand why the NFL is pushing Mexico independence day...who cares, I want to watch a football game not Spanish Culture month....and the commercials in Spanish were pretty dumb, IMO. But I understand how what Kornheiser said would be offensive...it was a very stupid thing to say, sadly it was on par with the stupidity of most of his comments.

During last night's game, ESPN's Tony Kornheiser uttered an apology, and no one seemed to know why. We were asked about it a few dozen times during the liveblog last night, and no one had a definitive answer. Enter the always-on-the-job Awful Announcing, who had the money quotes.

After listening to a snippet of the Spanish-language broadcast of the game in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Kornheiser said this:


"I took high school Spanish, either he said he's not going to be caught, or please pick up my dry cleaning tomorrow."

And later, this:


"I said something before which I shouldn't have said, I apologize for it. Not my first mistake, undoubtedly won't be my last, but a 100% apology."

Someone must've complained, or I doubt an apology would've ever made the airwaves. Evidently, the comments must have rubbed someone the wrong way, and that's alright. I'm not into telling people what should or shouldn't offend them.

But from what I can tell, Kornheiser didn't have any malicious intent there, nor did he intend to demean anyone. And before I say anything else, in the interest of full disclosure, I'll tell you that I didn't listen to the ESPN broadcast. I hooked up a Sirius joint at home so I could listen to the Westwood One broadcast while watching the game on TV. Tony Kornheiser is the one and only reason I did this.

But just from reading the quotes above, my best guess is that Kornheiser was making a "Look how silly I am, I don't understand Spanish!" gag. I don't think he was implying that a fellow of Hispanic descent should pick up his dry-cleaning, and I don't think he was implying that people of Hispanic descent should or do work predominately in the dry-cleaning industry.

So I don't expect any disciplinary action, and I certainly wouldn't expect Kornheiser to be fired. Although, judging from the comments we get during the liveblog, not many of you would mind if he was.

I'm Hispanic and I didn't really take any offense. It's Kornjulio trying to be funny.

Honestly, the one that I thought to my self, "What an idiot that guy is." was the one where he was making the comment on how lucky so and so was to be here. I don't remember exactly the phrase he used. Maybe somebody can refresh that one.

Anyway, all I can remember thinking to myself was, "Maybe you (Kornhiser) should think about how lucky you are. You look like you do, you don't have much talent and your not even all that knowledgable about football yet here you sit, Monday Night Football, telling somebody else how lucky they are to be here." or whatever the ignorant comment he made was.

I agree that there likely wasn't any intentional malice nor that he intended to demean anyone. However, it is entirely reasonable for someone to take the comment as demeaning.
