What do the Jets and Ravens defense have that we don't?

The only thing that separates from probably the two best defenses in the nfl is our pass coverage.

I'll even throw the Packers in there for now.

We all play a 3-4 first of all. And I would say among all those teams, we have the best pass rush.

So what separates us is the coverage.

And that brings us to whats wrong with our coverage.

I think we have pretty good corners. Probably not as good as Green Bay, but maybe just as good as New York had, and probably better than Baltimore.

So keying on Baltimore and New York.

I think the differences is safety and linebacker play. We really need our rookie linebackers to step up and improve our nickel coverage, and with their speed I really think they can do that. But I think thats where Jerry Jones mentioned changes at inside linebacker.

That said I think we all know that the safety play needs to improve. Gerald Sensabaugh being healthy I think is clearly an improvement for the year. He played strong when he was healthy, despite his performance in Minnesota. Not sure he is the answer, but I know he would be better next year. I don't know if you draft a safety to at least play behind Sensabaugh, or if we already have that safety on the team.

Hamlin on the other hand is just not a playmaker.

Improving base coverage just makes the team that much better.

Our pass coverage improved a great deal by removing Anthony Henry and Roy Williams/Keith Davis/Pat Watkins.

It can be even better if we get another cornerback to fight for the 4th cb position with Ball, and obviously a coverage free safety.

My point was that while we all know we need to improve at safety, I think we need to see something from those inside linebackers we drafted.

I expect really big things out of Jason Williams.

What is the point of this post? We already know we need more production from our Safeties. This isn't a ground-breaking revelation.

No offense.

Not ground breaking, but I dont think many people talk about inside linebacker in our sub nickel package.

the Jets and Ravens use a lot more exotic blitzes than we do.

They get a lot more INTs and seem to get the QB actually on the ground with greater ease but I don't think we are far off at all.

if we could only have every player on our team play better than every player on every other team, i think id give us a better chance to win. No team except Dallas has flaws, why is this?

oh wait a minute, sometimes its not the players.

alotof them are empty sacks. because dallas rarely had any on 3rd down. thats the biggest difference 3rd down. doesnt matter if its 3rd and 2 or 3rd and 30. its about to be first down.

*Sigh.* The empty sack argument gets smacked down every year. Because it's stupid.

Can't we just be happy with our defense? It's good. And to the OP, nothing separates our defense form the Jets and, especially, the Ravens. By the team we gelled, we were as good or better than anybody in the league on that side of the ball.

they get more consistent pressure and actually confuse the opposing offenses.

because of that there dbs actually look for the football.

they also have much better inside linebackers than we do.

Truth?

Dennis Thurman's teachings and examples for their secondary. I am being dead serious. He is the best DB Coach in the NFL, bar none. I will never forgive Jerry for not getting him when he publicly wanted to come here.

Having an Ed Reed patrolling the middle of the field helps too.

Is he an example of how the safety position is like the FB? Or is he a tremendous asset because of his playmaking skill?

Thats the only thing missing from this defense, a ballhawk.

Thats because the only TE to have a big game against us was that guy from NO whose name escapes me just this moment and RBs never did much of anything all year long.

I am sorry but Dave Campo is not the problem with our defense.

I don't think its a problem except for the lack of turnovers. Only one CB plays the ball and turns his head for the ball. Now that's on the DB coach first and the players second.

The LB pass coverage could be better.
