On "A Football Life - Jimmy Johnson" JJ talks about his thinking when he made the Herschel Walker trade. Basically he said they had no talent except for Herschel and that it was going to take a long time to rebuild with our own picks so my question is that kind of thinking relevant now?

I think it is harder to pull off multi player trades and draft picks as it was then. No doubt that deal made a big impact add to that Minn hit rock bottom so their picks were very good picks.

The only tradeable player on the roster now who remotely resembles Walker status then is Dez Bryant. The roster situation then and now is dissimilar in that the roster now is more talented. The need to sacrifice Bryant to upgrade the roster now is much less than the need to sacrifice Walker back then.

Actually with Dez' back problems I wouldn't be totally against this. Love Dez but his back scares me.

dez or smith are the only guys who could bring a big trade. but even they would'nt bring what that trade did because there was no salary cap then

Add in the fact that we have the only GM in the league senile enough to trade the future for a WR, and this is a nonstarter.

The salary cap makes the Herschel trade impossible these days.

Players made nothing back then, and veterans carried more value than draft picks. Now, it's completely opposite. Draft picks are gold, while veterans are disposable commodities.

I am glad you axed.
At the present time we half:

(First tier)
Dez
Romo (long in the tooth and with a huge contract)
Witten (long in the tooth and relatively expensive)
T. Smith
Dan Bailey
(second tier)
Demarco Murray

On Defense we half:

Lee (when healthy)

that's it.

There are no shortcuts. Draft wisely and build through free agency without wrecking the cap is the key.

Who else is going to make obscene acrobatic catches to keep Romo's numbers up? -Child please

that's why that trade goes down in history as the biggest. deals like that don't happen (I kind of think giving up 3 1st and 2 2nds for RGIII comes close, specially with rams holding #2 pick).

but at that time, the cowboys were more jags like, than anything else. we had no franchise QB, no talent and were a bad team with 3-11 record.

this team is 8-8 and has a franchise QB and some talent.

the question is have we peaked and are on the way down? or are we on the way up (or flat in our case).

why break up if you think you need a few pieces, as opposed to needing a lot of pieces like back in those days.

Herschel was a once in a lifetime trade; it's the poster for trade rape across all sports, not just football. Every GM knows about it, and would never give up that kind of haul again.

I don't know how much sense it makes to trade off pieces of our young foundation if we're not completely tanking.

Not because I have hope or anything, I just think with Romo we're stuck being at least somewhat competitive and drafting mid to high in the lower rounds.

Its possible, just not the extent of the Hershel Trade.

The Rams moved back 4 spots so Washington could draft RGIII. In return, the Rams received:

2012--6th pick overall and Washington's second round pick

2013 First-Round Pick

2014 First-Round Pick (2nd overall)

So two firsts and a second just to move back 4 spots. It can still be done to an extent.

What we have that another team would want? a nice stadium. Hottest cheerleaders.

The days of getting a bunch of picks/players for one or two guys is over with the way the league is structured today.

That was a serious haul right there. Damn that was a nice move. The Rams are headed in the right direction too.

They could draft Mike Evans, trade Dez and use the 60M+ contract that Dez is going to get on defensive free agents.

Witten salary is a reasonable 5M per year. Even at his age a team might give a mid round pick for him.

Some people think they could get a 6th round pick for Orton.

The best thing they can do in terms of giving up current value for future value would be to cut expensive players and minimize spending in 2014. They can then use the money saved in 2014 to sign some top free agents in 2015.
