A 1st, 3rd and huge contract is a hugh amount of resources for an SS in any scheme for the modern NFL.-This original post was written to show how unlikely this was going to happen, more fantasy then anything else. They had no intention in trading him last season which is why they asked for a god father type of offer. As I stated in one of my responses, my highest offer would be a #1 and a day 3 pick. When we heard the rumor for Collins/Adams straight up I tried to look at it objectively and to me it made some sense.
-You are right about Adams not playing to his strengths in our new scheme, where we are going to employ two so called FS's to cover their half of the field. Coverage is paramount rather then be a force against the run. This isn't Adams game, as he is more like a linebacker. Jets fans compare him to the former Steeler safety Troy Polamanu, which is a good comparison, both were terrific inside the box.
-Take away the scheme, how much better would Adams make this defense? I don't think their just one player away. Positional value for the Strong Safety position is extremely low, especially when this team is paying top dollar to another low position at RB.
-Front Office has treated the safety position like the 1 Tech DT for many years. I believe outside of Roy Williams years ago, they haven't used a premium pick at the position. Wilcox was probably the highest in rd 3. Not saying they should invest in a SS in rd 1, but if a good FS comes available, they need to hand in the card within the first two days of the draft. We have seen the top safeties come off the board within the top 50.
They could get a good Safety next off-season by signing one to a big contract without giving up picks.
