They occupy space.. In Phillips scheme they stunt and slant. But they are supposed to create opportunities for the 3-4 LB's to make plays. They take up space people.. Draw double teams and confuse the lineman.
Everyone just expects them to have 10 sacks a year. Not going to happen. As long as they free Lb's up to make plays, they are doing their job.
Quick, someone name the starting DEs on the 2005 Steeler defense? My thoughts exactly.
Spears can step it up but he's not near as pathetic as those that base progress on stat sheets would like to portray him to be.
