What Happened to Cowboys Fans?

Frankly, I think most fanbases actually think they are smarter than they really are. This isn't just a Cowboys fan affliction.
Yep. All fan bases are just brimming full of idiots... including this one.

I think Jones has already lived through that with a much more successful coach than Garrett. The pressure on Jones and the Coach was intense back in the Barry Switzer Era. In fact, I think the local media took it a bit too far and were a bit too negative back then. The worst probably was then Dallas Morning News sports journalist Randy Galloway. At one point, he stopped calling switzer, switzer even  and said from now on he would call him soemthing like ISP for Insignificant Sideline personal. Think readership finally got fed up and now he is on the star telegram.

Switzer was head and shoulders better than the hapless Garrett. Talk about useless?

Landry was a great innovator but he stopped doing that in the 80's and Bill Walsh assumed that role. And while Landry, Brandt and Schramm had been a great triumvirate, that died out as well and they were no longer drafting as well. And Schramm's heavy handedness with the players also took it's toll. Schramm would not have done well with FA. He needed that indentured servant situation that prevailed back then.

And I agree that it was time for Landry to step aside, only didn't like the way that was handled. The key was Johnson, without him I think Booger sells the team just like Bright did. Losing 1M a month called for bold moves and brash Jimmy was just what they needed but don't you know ole Booger was losing his pucker because Johnson wanted to go winless to assure himself of pick #1. And if the team hadn't made some noise in the draft with that Walker trade and started the climb in 90, Johnson could have bailed and done a Saban or Petrino and headed back to college and the deep water and left Booger holding the bag.

Landry was definitely innovative. The Flex D, O Line shuffle, shotgun (wasn’t new but not used much previously) to name a few. But there were some fails like alternating QBs.

Jimmy greatly benefited from the team in 1988 securing him the first overall pick and being left with the ballerina. I don’t believe Tom would’ve ever made the Walker trade because he valued experience to a fault at times.

I believe the situation today is comparable to 1988. It’ll take a change in ownership to get any significant change in long-term results. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

And we've been paying for it ever since. Loved those early 90's teams but that was because Jerry brought in Jimmy. If he didn't do that we wouldn't have won all those Sbs. And Jerry was a great owner then. Never had a complaint about him when we were winning those titles. He's not the same owner now. He changed when Jimmy left. I never bashed Landry in the late 80's even when we were struggling. To me he was the Dallas Copwboys. And during the 70's and early 80's I never complained about him because we were competing for championships every year. We haven't competed for anything other than the mediocre NFC East title this whole century.

I revered and respected Landry as well, not only as a coach but the man of integrity he was.

Jerry in 5 years went from Jimmy was worth 5 #1 picks to there were 500 coaches that could coach that team. In a sense, Jerry was right as we saw with the Bootlegger’s Son, but it couldn’t be sustained after Jimmy left.

Just because an idiot calls someone dumb doesn't mean he is dumb. The lesser intelligent are more given to insults and inanities. It's all they have. Consider the source and move on.:):)

We are on the same tier of bad as the Commanders.

This is the kind of factless pouting that has sunk this forum.

Dallas has won as games in the NFC as ANY team...and two of the past three division titles. And fools compare us with the Skins!

Ouch

Depends on what you value I suppose. NFC East Champions means little to me when we don't go deep into the playoffs. Or it would mean more, perhaps, if it hadn't been so long since we've been to a championship game and ultimately a super bowl. Us and the skins are in the tier that we haven't been there since the 90's, with the Red Skins having waited a bit longer. With all that, there still organizations that have suffered worse than us.

I was talking to a young Cowboys fan last night at the bar. I mentioned being a fan through the rough times makes it all pay off when we win it all like when we went 1-15. He nearly passed out and questioned if I was telling him the truth. I thought he was going to die when I told him Troy, Emmitt and Irvin were on the team and Jimmy was the coach.
I didn't read all of the replies, but Emmitt was NOT on the 1989 1-15 team. He arrived in 1990. Just saying.

I have not read through 10 pages, so I'm sure this has been said, at least we are not Eagles and Patriot fans...

1989. Jimmy came in 1989. That was his first year.

It's actually pretty accurate. That became obvious again when last week it became clear that Jerry was making the call on the OC. I never said he doesn't take or use input, but he's the one who makes the final call. What you see as "changes" is really just tinkering. The core structure of the organization is the same. McClay? He's in his job because Jerry wanted someone to filter the information coming from the coaches and scouts so Jerry could make a decision with regards to player personnel. But Jerry, in the end, makes the call. It's why he sits prominently in the draft room, he's the one making calls on trades, etc. You said "much more" by committee but even in that, there is still one voice from that committee that makes the call (well two voices if you include Stephen). Oh and last week Stephen seemed to reiterate the stance his father takes - that the Cowboys don't need a real GM as long the Jones' are running it.

No organization operates like this where the owner (and his son) are also the GM and make all the decisions from the draft, to the FA, to the assistant coaches. I mean we don't even let our HC, that the Jones boys apparently love, pick his own coaching staff.

PS - This idea that the Cowboys were an Elliott suspension away from a 3 time division champ is bogus. First of all, the Eagles went 13-3 that year and the only reason they weren't 14-2 was because they laid down that last game against us because they had the #1 seed wrapped up. Two, the Cowboys, before Elliott got suspended were only 5-3, so hardly ripping it up.
That's fine. If you want to deny you said Jones "Makes all of the calls." - feel free. Even though that is exactly what you posted.

I would have agreed had you stated he has the "Final call." In which he should. Buy a franchise and good luck.

Next, McClay. Your take is ridiculous.
"McClay? He's in his job because Jerry wanted someone to filter the information coming from the coaches and scouts so Jerry could make a decision with regards to player personnel."

You lost me man, I generally enjoy your opinion and take on a lot of topics. Hell, you've offered a few perspectives that made me think different. But your take on McClay is just not accurate.

Agree to disagree.

Go and read some of the other NFL teams websites - its the same all over.

Right?!?!

It’s like people forgot what “fan” means lol. We’re a bunch of fantastics win, lose or draw. We don’t need to walk around with a white board trying to spout off how “smart” we are. Go have fun be rowdy make noise and enjoy yourself! Be a damn fan that’s how I see it.
