What happened to the CBs playing man?

I <thought> I saw a lot of zone with the corners playoff off quite a bit. Please correct me if I am wrong.

My impression was that this season they were going to play predominantly man to best maximize Carr and Claiborne's skill-sets.

My initial thought is they decided to go zone (mainly) because Kapernick is such a threat to run with it.

They weren't comfortable manning up with Kap able to run it on them when they did.

I think this was the thinking. Hoping we see more man next wk. mo and Carr just flat out can't play zone and in their defense weren't drafted/signed to do so.

Carr looked pathetic

Whenever I see Carr on TV, he looks like he is chasing some WR -- and it doesn't seem to matter if the WR he is chasing already has the ball OR is just running a pattern and hasn't been thrown the ball yet.

Frankly, he looked very much like the shell shocked guy who took the brunt of Megatron's 14 catch 329 game against the Cowboys last season -- Carr never was the same.

I saw a lot of zone as well. We should've made some type of adjustment if we feared Kap was going to be a threat with his legs. We should've thrown an extra DB to spy him on those downs so we could play more man.

You are too knowledgeable of a poster to ask this question. Playing man against a running QB is a recipe for disaster. I think you knew that and just wanted to take a potshot at Carr.

I accept the strong possibility that they played zone because of Kaepernick's running ability.

If the team is so much better playing zone it does make you question why they didn't choose to spy Kaepernick instead with a LB. It's what Seattle did on Thursday night with Aaron Rodgers.

Granted, Rodgers isn't the runner that Kaepernick is, however, certainly would have been nice to see them try spying (maybe they did?) as opposed to sticking with zone which clearly wasn't working.

It was a little disappointing to see CBs lined up 9 yards off when it was 8 yards for a 1st down.

3&4 Claiborne starts 4 yard out and backs up about to 10 yards for boldin or Johnson , I can't remember , easy pitch and catch :(

Hard to play a lot of man too when you can't generate a pass rush. Much easier to play a man scheme with a consistent pass rush.

Once again, attribute to poor coaching. I get game planning against other teams and making adjustments. But damn, when you are a horrid zone team and your strength is man to man, then why not go with your strength and make the other team beat you. It seems this coaching staff would rather do the opposite. Also while on my coaching rant, Garrett needs to grow some balls and tell Tony, if you check out of this run play, I will sit your *** down for the rest of the game. Tony Romo is not and will not be a good offensive coordinator.

Our pass rush really wasnt the problem, man gives those dlineman just a second or two more to get to the qb. I figured we could have Church spy and Wilcox over the top shaded to there faster wr side. They didnt have tons of speed so its not like we were super worried about the deep ball.

The down didn't matter at all...passes were going like condoms in a Junior High, at the 8-12 yard range.

I would've preferred to take our chances playing Man + QB spy instead of sitting back letting Kaepernick look like an all time great in the pocket

Only thing that made Kapernick look good was playing on a short field after every turnover. Otherwise Niners did not sustain many long drives, turnovers and field position killed us not the Niners.

The team should play whatever scheme their players can execute, regardless of their opponent.

Basically compromising your ability to defend the pass in order to prevent possible scrambling plays by the other QB?

Yeah, that makes a ton of sense.
