What Happens If Tyron Is A Below Average LT in 2023?

When it comes to replacing Tyron - be it by injury or performance - I don't buy that Tyler is the definitive answer. If, say, Waletzko is a better LT than Farniok is a LG, it makes way more sense to plug in Waletzko at LT than it does Tyler.
I'm very interested in seeing Waletzko. Would love if he could be the future at LT and we could keep Tyler at guard. I know that's a long shot, but I did like the brief glimpse we got of him last year.

The answer to "what if he has a great season" is obvious....we'll be set. But that possibly doesn't require a backup plan. The other possibility DOES require a backup plan...

But why is everyone so afraid of contemplating the OP's hypothetical? All I hear is "he won't be...he won't be...he won't be"

I sure hope the coaches don't use that logic.

Anytime u have a player over 30...u better start planning for these What Ifs...and not just stick ur head in the sand and say "he'll be fine". He very well may be fine.. but he's in the downside of his career. U plan for the worst (at least if the worst has a reasonable chance of happening, as this does) but hope for the best.

The truth is....they'd just have to give him constant help with a TE and/or RB...thus reducing the number of receivers we have out on routes. And we'd have to lean on the run, and do more quick drops.

That's not a death sentence though..... but people are acting like it's an absolute impossibility that this older player with bad injury history turns in a below average season this year.
Mike McCarthy is way closer to my stance then yours. I promise Tyron Smiths strength isn't leaving at 32 years old. When I say I'm not worried I mean...like he's probably one of the only starters on this team I'm not worried about.

LOL.

How's all that gonna work out when Martin isn't around either? You starting OGs could be Edoga and Farniok. That would be one of the bottom 10-12 OG rotations in the NFL. I swear if anyone here says that's a good pairing................ hahaha.

You had best hope Tyron plays well and Martin comes back because the alternative is a season with a really questionable (and likely poor) OL.
Martin will be here eventually.

HE WILL BE WHAT WE JUST SAW IN PRACTICE, the better pass rushers will get some good moves off of him!

My thinking is they will go with Tyler Smith at LT once Tyron is done and maybe Richards could factor in at guard. But from what I have seen of practice it looks like Richards has only been playing tackle so we'll see.
Hmm.. Maybe they feel Asim can be the swing? That may be a good way to get him acclimated. Mike Solari the line coach has worked with far less talent when he was in Seattle and got them up to snuff well enuff to be decent. Im going to trust him on this. Im kinda like u, I felt we might be able to get him in at guard to begin with. His foot work needs alot of work, and at guard he will be protected better than being on an island. We do have a need at guard.

Below average can be a lot of space, if he's getting beat consistently, they will have to act, the QB health is #1.

It would not surprise me that Big Smitty told Parson to come at him as hard as he can to help get him where he wants to be.

According to him, that last injury was a freak and he is not injury prone. The man is only 32 and can be a handful for edge rushers.

Even aging, injured OL usually still have something in the tank….maybe not all pro level but good enough. As long as Tyron is on the field, he’s the least of my worrries

Parcells used to say “You can’t have steak on every plate”, which you can’t nowdays. Plus, we can’t do anything about it, and life is too short. That’s why I’ve chosen not to worry about it. That said, I think many are underestimating a couple of our backups.
I think some of you are letting a bit of homerism and general season excitement cloud your thinking.

If Martin doesn’t play and Tyron struggles (or gets hurt) this is a really questionable OL left. A season wrecking type OL.

Well then why even reply to the thread?

The whole point of the OP was what IF the worst happens? Not "Hey, drill it into my head that the worst won't happen"

Yall have kinda derailed the conversation he was trying to have with anyone who likes to have contingency plans.

And if that happens, we’ll all be bummed. But what can WE do? Honestly, EVERY team has a potential disaster scenario.

“A bit of homerism and general season excitement” USED TO BE normal! Now, you’re a weirdo.

Everyone is excited for the season. But some don't let the fact football is just over the horizon cloud rational thought.

If Smith gets hurt/struggles and Martin isn't here at the start of the season, what we have is a pretty shoddy OL left and part of that is self inflicted by this front office. It's just disappointing because this team has a roster capable of being really good. But a mediocre to bad OL derails that. Jerry should know better. That's how important Martin is. You bring him back into camp and ready to start the season and you can possibly absorb an issue with Tyron Smith. Without Martin, you absolutely cannot IMO.

ZM is important, yes. We all know it, including Jerry. I GUARANTEE you, if Jerry doesn’t stand firm, the holdouts will start stacking up. I hope he plays and I think he will. They’ll find a way to show their appreciation. Any deficiencies a team has is “self inflicted” in some way.

This exact same argument was made when they buckled on Elliott. And there was not this sudden rash of hold outs.

The biggest reason why? Most guys dont have the clout of a Martin to hold out. Chris Jones is holding out in KC. If the Chiefs sign him, there suddenly won't be a rash of players holding out in KC. We see hold outs all the time from big name players across the league and rarely, if ever, is there suddenly a rush to hold out. Because there are very few players that can hold out knowing their significant importance to the team.

Parsons, Lamb, and who knows who else, will want more in the next year. Can’t pay everyone. Players need to honor their contract.

Like I said before, if Jerry pays, he’ll get criticized for buckling. If he doesn’t, he’ll get criticized for crippling the OL. He buckled with Zeke and paid the price. He’s trying to change the record, as to not repeat history
