What I Don't Understand About Cowboys Fans?

Well, as you can see, I've only registered to this board quite recently, however I did lurk as a guest for a considerable amount of time before joining. I'd like to 1st state that I've been a Cowboys fan since I was old enough to understand the game of football. I currently (and always have) lived in the Eastern part of our country. The area I'm in is specifically saturated with Eagles, Steelers, Commanders, Ravens, and Giants fans. All of my close friends are fans of one of these teams (which makes for an entertaining rivalry during the season) and I literally am rarely surrounded by Cowboys fans.

After reading a large amount of the content on this board, I really have one question I'd like to pose to all of the Jerry naysayers: Why are you a fan of the Dallas Cowboys?

The disdain for Jerry that some of the posters on this board exhibit really makes me wonder why you would even want to be a fan of the team? I mean, he's owned the team for over 20 years, and he is clearly going to continue to conduct himself the way that he has up until this point. With that being said, it's safe to say that he is probably the most recognizable individual connected to the organization. If as a fan, you disagree with his actions in general, and who he is as an owner, why wouldn't you just root for a team that operates in a fashion that you do agree with? To me, being a fan in general is about following and cheering for a team that you believe in, and that you want to see be successful. Some of the perpetually negative posters on here make me wonder- do you even enjoy watching the games? Do you cheer when the 'boys win?

Maybe I'm just weird, but it seems odd to me that some of the "fans" on here don't even appear to enjoy being a fan of the Cowboys. And isn't that the whole point? To enjoy the games? To enjoy the different facets of the organization? If I hated Jerry that much I don't think I'd have much fun as a fan.

Sorry if this was too long and drawn out, but I rarely post on message boards and I became quite perplexed after I started following this board and decided to make a thread about it. Thoughts?

Thanks. Yes, I do believe fans should be able to question some of the decisions made by the team. I've done it myself.

For example, recently Jerry made comments about Dez returning kicks. I didn't like that. I thought Jerry should have kept his mouth shut and leave it to the coaches. I also do not like that we didn't necessarily address the o-line this offseason in a way that doesn't leave us with questions. Could Livings and Bernadeau turn out to be good for us? Yes. I think they could be Kosier-type pick ups for us. But I do not feel like we have a good center on the roster at all. I am very disturbed that we didn't address that position.

The line that is crossed that gets a poster the negative label, as you say, I believe has to do with their history. Do I care if, say, SDogo or BraveHeartFan says something negative? Not really. If they say something negative, I take them seriously. They generally have good, realistic posts and strike a good balance. But if a poster is constantly negative in every single post I see, then that's a different story. I know no matter what Risen Star is going to have a gripe about anything having to do with the front office and anything having to do with a position that's not the trenches. I know that even if the thread isn't even about those things, he'll find a way to connect it. It's to the point where people laugh at him about it rather than take anything he says seriously. I know that Clove is always always going to post something negative about Romo. I know that even if it's not a thread about Romo, he'll find a way to passively aggressively indirectly take a shot at Romo. And there are many other posters that will post negative no matter what the Cowboys do. They are happy about nothing. In addition, a good majority of these "negative" posters tend to be unfriendly in general. They are quick to jump on someone about something. They are generally the first to resort to insults. They tend to not actually address the issues and instead stick to their same old lines. I've been asking Clove for years what his solution is for quarterback if we didn't have Romo. He has yet to answer.

These posters also generally do not have an avatar or sig that has anything to do with the Cowboys in a supportive way. To me, even if you're a true fan that might be on the negative side but still enjoys a win, you will at least have, say, a Star as your avatar or something. None of the haters ever show their support image-wise. I believe they'd actually be unhappy to have themselves associated with the blue and silver around here. In fact, Clove, Risen Star, KJJ, Ren, any of you, prove me wrong. Change either your avatar or sig to something Cowboys related showing your fandom, and not something negative to prove a point. Do it for the rest of the offseason. I dare you.

Many haters like to say, "Don't defend this with stats." Well, it's because they don't have the stats to back their points up. Often they don't have evidence other than their own opinion. If they backed their negative comments with stats just like I can with my positive view, then I might listen. If Romo had a bad game, alright, he had a bad game. It's there on paper. If Romo sucked, I'd agree with them. But he doesn't, so they really have no ground to stand on.

However, in addition to all of that, there is one thing that is the most telling thing about the negative posters that generally get black listed in my book...

When we win, they disappear.

They won't show up for days after we win. You won't hear from them until maybe Wednesday, usually Thursday. That's when they'll pop up with stuff we did wrong... even though we won.

This is truly what leads me to believe that they don't enjoy winning. Like it was said a few posts back, some of them will actually be unhappy to see Jerry or Romo hoist the Lombardi over their heads. They'd be more upset that they were wrong rather than happy over the fact that we won. And so far not one of those haters has denied that.

In addition, if you have to call yourself a "realist", then you're generally not a realist. You're a hater. Realists analyze and discuss both sides of the coin. They acknowledge the good and the bad. Most self-described realists around here only talk about the bad.

Maybe I'm like this because I look at this team differently. I haven't been following this team since the 70s. I was born in 1988. I'm a Cowboys fan because my dad is a Cowboys fan. Both of my grandpas were Cowboys fans. One was a fan because, as he said while sticking out his chest and raising his head, "I moved to Texas." The other is because he was already a Texan. It's in my blood.

That being said, I honestly don't remember the good years. My first memory of the Cowboys is Jimmy Johnson's hair because it looked like my dad's. The first Super Bowl I truly remember is '94 9ers/Chargers, and I only remember seeing their logos on TV, not any of the play. I remember our '95 Super Bowl win, but I didn't understand enough to truly appreciate it or enjoy it.

I truly got into football and started to understand it when I first strapped on the pads myself. That's when I fell in love with the Cowboys and everything my dad had said was making sense. And that we when our perennial success was behind us.

To me, I've always been rooting for a bit of an underdog. I've gone through all the bad with the Cowboys because that's when I fell in love with them. Jerry Jones has always been my owner. I don't always agree with him, but he's all I've ever known. He might not have the slightest clue that I exist, but I feel like we're in this together. To me, every ounce of success the Cowboys experience is exciting to me because it's the first time I've experienced it. This is why I think I'm able to appreciate the downs and well as the ups. This is why I can cherish the journey rather than only expect success. I wasn't spoiled by the five rings before, I guess. Am I upset when we lose? Hell yes. Don't talk to me the day after and don't expect me to be happy for a bit, but that just makes the wins all that much sweeter. I know we'll get there, and when we do, it'll be more than I can ever imagine, because I don't know what it feels like. And I'll be bouncing off the walls, haters be damned.

Well said Mike.

I don't understand it either I sometimes complain after a brutal game about what went wrong and who did what...but I have seen some crazy stuff while associated with message boards...

things like "fans" being against the Cowboys draft pick or FA pick up and rooting against them how stupid is that. We had a guy on here that would just trash Henson in every post. and others who would do the same to other players

Same can be said with Coaches we had.

Some give their opinion and anything that falls outside of that and would make the Cowboys better they are against...its beyond stupid

and some never have anything good to say you would think that if the team is bringing them that much misery they should walk away.

Jerry has definitely made some mistakes, in regards to player personnel. But one thing I always admire about Jerry, is he always pays to keep his star players, and is not afraid to spend money to try and better the team.

That wasn't the point of the OP. The OP is asking 'why be a fan if you don't enjoy the thing you're fanatic about?' And as near as I can tell, the answer is that some people just like being miserable.

What I've never understood is why people believe being *miserable* in regards to a pass-time is somehow noble or intellectually realistic. If all that misery changed anything, I might see their point, but all it does is lead to frustration. It's pointless.

Now, on message boards, there's a psychological effect where people like to insulate themselves from disappointment or from putting themselves out there and being wrong because the enjoy the karma-effect of being able to say 'I told you so.' That's always been the case, and it's the reason a fair number of posters here adopt a 'realistic' position.

I've always had a hard time telling the 'realistic' position from a fetal position, myself. It's not like we don't all know the odds are against the Cowboys winning the Superbowl in any given year. We all know that realistically, the odds of success are slim and that a handful of plays makes the difference between a division crown and missing the playoffs. We all know that if you bet the field, you're more likely to win. So what? So probabilities favor betting against the likelihood of a single team winning. Even 16 years in a row. You can do that and be right more often than not. Whoop-de-do.

If you don't like your odds, don't bet. But what's the point of complaining to the odds-maker? Is complaining realistic? It's not. What's it going to change? Is it going to make you more likely to win? The answer is, it's not. Complaining about a situation you cannot change is not realistic at all. It's just annoying.

Now, do other Cowboy fans have the right to be annoying? Sure they do. And that's a good thing, too, because a lot of them indulge in the privilege. Every. Damn. Time. They. Post. Do they have the right to complain about things that don't make any sense? Sure they do. So, they do. It doesn't make them any less of a fan, or at least not enough to really matter.

What it does mean is that they probably enjoy the season less than posters who prefer to place their bets and let their money ride. That might not be true of all of them. There are such things as masochists. But I believe it's true of most of them. What I don't appreciate is that some of them seem to think they've got an obligation to make the season less enjoyable for the rest of us.

And, what is most ironic is that the self-described realists on this board--if you were to ever meet them in the real world--are almost certainly less likely to tackle problems head-on than many of the homers and sunshine-pumpers. From my experience, positive people make positive things happen. Negative people complain about why things aren't positive.

Maybe some of you out there have experienced the opposite. I don't know. I'd be interested to hear about it if you have. From what I've seen, practicality and cynicism don't go hand-in-hand all that often. It's optimism that begets resilience and resilience that begets success. Pessimism begets defeat. Maybe it's the case that either are realistic outcomes, depending upon your outlook. If that's the case, than we're all realists here, beneath the surface, and the only difference is that some of us are less miserable about it than others.

I think he's a horrible owner. I'd give up our next 5 1st round picks to be free of that family.

I'd sure give up 3 at least.

Jones makes it very difficult. It's like being married to a messed up woman. You want it to work...but certain things will never change...and when the dysfunction runs deep and you've lost all respect...

But when there are "children involved" that you love...Romo, Austin, Ware, etc...sometimes you stay for them.

First, I've noticed this forum is a haven for the type of personality that craves both being right AND proving others wrong. The team is the excuse for the post but most important is "winning" the argument and being recognized as someone above the stupid sheep and immune to the kool-aid. To be fair, we haven't had sustained success for a long time, so one can make a good living being negative about a myriad of Cowboys topics and they aren't neccessarily wrong.

Second, the above personalities can be as prolific as their energy will take them. They may only make up 5% of the people but might look like 50% of the posts in some threads. Also, there is a "captive audience" of fans on this board and not all have the restraint to ignore polarizing statements (myself included, at times, to my dismay). Many of the posts "with legs" on this forum are examples of blind optimisim crashing into abject negativity, and vice versa.

This didn't get enough love, probably because it hit too close to home.

Cowboys > Jerry

Not being pleased with atrocious management, does not render one miserable, or a bad fan for that matter.

As fans of America's Team, we want to win every year, or at least be in contention every year. I live too far away to go to their games, but I still support the team financially (jerseys, hats, mugs, etc.). Also, the Cowboys are one of the biggest draws in TV and thus, they are more marketable - Cowboy fans likely see more advertising time than fans of all other teams.

My point is that we all support this team in many ways and it is MY expectation to win each week. I am very disappointed/angry when we don't (in reality, I stay away from the family for a few hours). If I am suporting a team both in spirit and financially, then I don't want to see idiotic moves by the FO/ownership.

I think JJ is a great owner and has been wonderful to the sport. As a GM I am often VERY frustrated by him sticking his nose in where he shouldn't. Just because he is a billionaire and owns the team doesn't mean he should try to coach them (indirectly). He needs to let his football guys make the football decisions. This year (and last), he seems to have started the process to hand over the reigns to Stephen and Red. The team seems to have moved in a positive/forward direction. For that I am happy.

Jerry as owner = A+
Jerry as GM = D+

Bottom line: To the OP I would say that while some fans can get pissy no matter what, most true Cowboy fans will support the team no matter what. But, we are compensated for that support by seeing success and by having the ability to voice our opinions whenever we want, especially in on-line forums.

this is a wonderful post, and i enjoyed it, but people of all different walks take to things differently. which is why some say "art" always gets a different answer when people are looking at the same thing.

For some people the cowboys or their team isnt their pessimism , its their outlet sometimes its to a knee jerk reaction, or its something off the cuff, maybe because the adreneline, the let down, the over thinking (as i am wont to do) or something that just strikes the brain differently.

Teams or hobbys are a focal point for the mind, maybe to forget the day for a few hours, to excite ourselfs, or just be part of the crowd, we all have our different reasons and we all have our ways of looking at the "art" some will see the picture of the boat and the family on it and some will see the family on vacation having a good time, and some will see the family running away from their lives, there is no right or wrong answer, its what the brain percieves at that time most likely due to how our day is going or what we feel in that instance. To me i would create a whole scenario how the father is a CIA agent getting ready to double cross the US for a few hundred thousand and is taking the family to indernational waters to make the switch. And the painter might have just painted his family vacation. Thats the way teh mind goes, we cant predict it, sometimes we cant control and our outlets allow us to be free and think and do differently than how we would normally. To some people in the corporate cubicle getting ready to toss the tie and good manners and drink a beer and get ready to explode, to the hard worker out in the field to the analyst of a finacial company, we all see things and do things differently. Some of us can control it others cant. Dont judge them for their answers and we shouldnt judge u for yours. Which im not by teh way still an excellent post. We should realize this focal point is a kewl with many different facets and all facets are not going to look the same or think the same or even talk the same, but they are united to create a jewel that to the naked eye is very beautiful and shares a common goal regardless of what happens in their mind.

I wish u all a good day.

Proximo, maybe I missed it, but when did you start being a fan? And why did you choose the Cowboys back then?

Anyway, some of my thoughts. Others have already said many of the same things.

1. I was and am a fan because the Cowboys were the local team of my favorite sport long before Jerry came along.

2. I don't even comprehend the idea of "If you think they aren't going to win, why even root for them". So how often are we to jump around to teams with the best odds of winning? Every year? Every three years? Every month? The question doesn't even make sense. Like many others, I rooted for the Rangers and Mavericks for years when they were awful teams.

3. This is a discussion board. Some of the people on this board take threads here way too seriously. Just because you don't agree with the way Jerry does things, or certain things the team does, doesn't make you a raging pessimist who hates life. Really, that's just a disguised ad hominem. This team has a losing record the last two seasons and set a franchise record for fourth quarter collapses last year. So obviously there have been some negatives to this team -- why are you necessarily some miserable human being just because you discuss them? That's the entire point of the board.

4. If you really want to bring logic into this, forget rooting for a mediocre team. Why are we all wasting time, energy, and money to root for any sports team comprised of a bunch of strangers who don't care anything about us?

5.

Don't act for one second like this only applies to one side of the aisle.

Most Cowboy fans, especially older ones like myself (I'll be 50 in October), are used to winning. At one time, we were in the playoffs EVERY year and contenders for the Super Bowl almost every year. I'm primarily talking about the late 1960's throughout the early 1980's. We experienced a big time drop in the middle to late 1980's and then another great period throughout most of the 1990's. We haven't really been relevant since that time for the most part. A lot of our fans have gotten a bit skeptical about the organization and are getting tired of always being disappointed. It's a natural thing. We want to get back to the mountain top so bad, that discontent rears its ugly head. It doesn't mean anyone is less of a fan. It just means they want things to be the way they once were. Hopefully we're entering another period of resurgence.

My apologies to you as well. I supposed I missed it somehow. I don't think, however, that Prox's question was really aimed at you. You tend to lean on the realistic and fair side, not the hater miserable side. Perhaps I didn't think of your post because I never thought of you as a hater.

No worries. I just didn't want what I said to be taken in the wrong way. I know it can be hard to read a posters intent over the internet and sometimes it can be misinterpreted. And you are right that I am not a hater, but I do try to understand every sides perspective.
