What is Dak's supposed "leverage"?

Dak has leverage on the following points.

1. He actually has value if he hits the open market as I imagine there are at least a few teams that would want to sign him
2. Dallas' plan B at QB as of right now is Cooper Rush/Trey Lance
3. Dallas will have to carry a $40 million cap hit if Dak simply walks away which can only be reduced by signing Dak

Dallas has leverage on the following points.

1. They are the Dallas Cowboys which can bring a lot of money in endorsements etc.
2. There is not likely going to be a team with the talent of the Cowboys in need of a QB except maybe the Jets (I am not sure what the Rodgers situation is)
3. Dak has roots in the area and wants to stay (speculation)

It is probably in each's best interest to stay together. It feels like the points on which each has leverage kind of wash out. Dak can leave and get the money he wants but he could potentially be walking into an unknown situation to do so. Dallas could find a cheap QB (draft) and offset the dead money allocated to the position but that is an unknown situation.
Add to Dak’s leverage list the fact that he can be acquired by a team without them having to give up any draft or player assets.

Instead of posting a weekly nonsensical "Dak sucks" thread, you should make a list of viable options that you'd replace Dak with. Having the nfl, ufl, and college out there should make it easy.
It's not weekly...It's daily and maybe becoming hourly with this guy. He knows nothing about football from his posts and is the Jerry Jones of posters

“Leverage” means nothing if one of the two parties has already decided to move on.

Assuming that isn’t the case, Prescott will have roughly 4-8 suitors that will pay him near top of the market money.

Dallas does not have 4-8 viable replacements at QB, possibly not even one, without a downgrade.

If Dak walks, either by his own choice or the team doesn’t want him, the only reasonable alternative is to go into tank/rebuild mode and hope you land a top QB with one of your high picks over the next several years.

There’s no middle ground to play here the way I see it.
Don't a lot of teams do this? Move on, trade, whatever...a good player? Either age, contracts, what have you.

Not sure why people are freaking out about it being Dak.

Depends on the commitment to "move on".

At this point if you're holding your breath for a really beneficial trade of Dak....you probably won't survive.

I keep reading about Dak supposedly having leverage in contract negotiations with the Cowboys, but what does he really have?
He has to be desirable for the Cowboys to want to sign him, but why should they want him back?
He has a proven record of choking in the biggest games every season.
Cooper Rush outplayed him when he came in during Dak's injury two years ago, going 5-1.
Dak single handedly cost the Cowboys the game versus the Packers last season in the playoffs, and cost McCarthy the win in his return to Green Bay the year before.
Dak promised to bring rings to the Cowboys with his last contract, but has consistently been the reason they don't win versus good teams and in the playoffs.
So what "leverage" does he supposedly have? He has a proven record of letting the Cowboys down every time they need him.
It would seem that he should be hoping and praying that Jerry is still gullible enough to give him another chance.
so he has leverage because he has no trade clause. and last year of contract. everyone except a few on this board like yourself think no one will sign him, while the MARKET is such that he will get 50M and above most probably in the open market.

also, that Jones has no alternative plan. Dak is the best QB on the roster, which says a lot about the roster than Dak.

Cooper rush absolutely did not out play him. that's being blind. Cooper rush led offense was 22nd ranked or worse in almost every statistical category. that's not out playing. the defense gave up average of 13 points during the wins. the very first time the defense gave up more than 20 points we got blown out because he couldn't lead the offense. so yeah, lets not go there.

and I can give you a list of 500 NFL players who promised a ring. they all say that. every owner will tell you their goal is to win a superbowl. otherwise why be in the league.

he has leverage, he will playout this year at 55M. he doesn't have to renegotiate to lower cap hit. he has no trade clause. Jerry can do one of two things. either release him now and take a hit. which then Dak can sign with any team at 50M and above. or he waits until next year and he is outright FA and can sign with anyone and the market will be hot as usual. Jerry is left holding his nuts. if the 35 year old, not having accomplished anything Kirck Cousins gets 45M, then Dak will get at least 50M. so Dak has all the leverage.

with that said, you definitely are saying wins and losses are a QB stat, the rest are not accountable.

if you don't understand the above. then you have no idea about NFL and how it works. you have no idea.

Do millionaires really have any possible leverage on billionaires in any facet of reality at the end of the day? Without photos/videos, I say no...

Dak has leverage because he's going to make $60M after this season no matter what the Cowboys do. He has zero reason to cave to any contract demands Jerry would have for him.
I think this is correct. He just doesn't have any leverage on the Cowboys if Jerry is at least half thinking this though. If not... well, we like our guys.

The only leverage Dak has:

The gaslighting by some fans and media trying to scare people out of even trying to replace Dak with predictions of 0-17 seasons.

Jerry Jones' ego. Jerry doesn't like to be proven wrong about "his guys". It's why he kept Garrett far beyond any reasonable time.

You will ignore all of this. I am only posting this as an answer. You have made the mistake of replacing your opinion of what should happen with how Jerry Jones thinks. Every red strikethrough above is not how Jones thinks. It is how you and others believe Jones should think.

Jones wants Dak Prescott as his starting quarterback. That remains true since his two-month evaluation of Prescott in his rookie season. He would prefer retaining Prescott under more favorable contractual terms though. The only actual leverage Prescott owns is his no trade clause, which I do not believe matters to Jones as much as others do.

Jones is the same individual with complete authority over the roster. He is the same person who signed a veteran quarterback (Tony Banks) as a mentor and waived him before allowing him to mentor. He is the same person who did not stop backing Quincy Carter until Carter weeded himself off the roster. He is the same person who backed Tony Romo for ten years until injury and circumstance gifted him a way out of that relationship. He is the same person who gave a better coach, Chan Gailey, two years and immediately gave a worst coach, Dave Campo, three years. He is the same person who gave a highly respected college and NFL multiple championship winning head coach (Jimmy Johnson) five years and a barely-wet-behind-the-ears resume fake wunderkind coach (Jason Garrett) nearly ten years. And the examples of how the man thinks certainly does not end with these examples.

Want an NFL owner and general manager who thinks like you do? Well. That want has never been true in Dallas since February 1989.

There is a reason why Jones retaining Prescott is unthinkable to you. The guy in the mirror starting back at you each day is not the Mad Genius.

Dak only has leverage if the Cowboys want him back.
He's done nothing to make anyone expect any more from him than he's already done,
If the Cowboys are content with mediocrity and being humiliated on national TV every time they play anyone who is a real competitor, then maybe they want him back.
But I find it hard to believe that it's worth $60 million per year just to beat the 8-8's.

What another team might pay him isn't leverage over Dallas. It may influence Dak's decision, but that's all.

The first two questions are:
Does Dallas want to retain him? If no, there is no leverage the player can apply. If yes, move to question 2.
At what price point both in terms of real dollars & cap flexibility? If Dallas's answer to those are less than Dak's alternatives, then Dak has options ..., but not leverage to change Dallas's viewpoint.

I would like to buy a fancy new vehicle but I have a price point I'm not willing to exceed. The fact that others might pay the price doesn't give the dealership leverage over me.

So you get rid of Dak because he can never get anything done in the post season. Then you replace him with another QB who can never get anything done in the post season.

I don't see whether keeping Dak or getting rid of him is going to make any difference.

Steelers can't wait to sign Dak while giving up zero draft picks.
He could win it all in Pittsburgh. They’ll support him with a solid defense. The Steelers have always been known for their defense. There’s going to be a huge bidding war if Dak enters free agency.

Mr Prescott has no leverage, Only leverage is if he reaches the Championship game.
