In the immortal words of Monty Python, “always look on the bright side of life.” When Jourdan Lewis announced he was leaving the
Dallas Cowboys in free agency earlier in the week, that aforementioned “bright side” was a tough thing to identify. Lewis was arguably the best nickel cornerback in the NFL. His versatility, tenacity and resolve embody everything a team wants from one of its players. Without question, his exodus leaves a major void in the Dallas seconday this offseason.
Lewis’ departure also might just pave the way for DaRon Bland’s return. Bland, a 2023 All-Pro and record holder for the most interceptions returned for touchdowns in a single season, is scheduled to hit free agency himself next March. Despite all his success as a pro, his future with the Cowboys has been seen as anything but assured. The Cowboys already pay All-Pro Trevon Diggs significant money at the CB spot opposite Bland. If they would have given Lewis market-setting money at nickel CB as well, they would probably be financially maxed out at CB position. But with Lewis out of the picture, a world of possibilities opens up for a man who many believe might just be the best CB of the bunch.

Able to play inside as well as outside, Bland is a versatile weapon who can travel with opponents. His tackling is well above average and his proficiency in both man and zone schemes make him a defensive coordinator’s best friend. Bland may not have the length and jaw-dropping athleticism as Diggs, but he may actually be better when all facets of the game are considered. That’s why potentially losing him in 2026 was such a tough pill to swallow.
