What is our team identity of our offense on the field?

What are we currently known for on Offense

Are we a passing team, running team, ball control- what?

I do not know our identity, back in the 90's it was run Emmitt, swing pass to Moose, hit Novachek on 3rd down, go to Irvin on a deep out on 3rd and long, and hit Harper on a deep post for a homerun.

What is our team identity on offense?

Right now I feel we have no identity- It's like this, Romo goes to the line, calls 3 or 4 audibles and snaps the ball with 1 second on the play clock. We have not one play call as fans that we can sit back in say "oh, here comes the out pattern to Dez" or "here comes McFadden on 1st and 10 up the middle"

Thoughts!!!!

Our "identity" is the passing game. Romo, Dez, and Witten with whatever RB we happen to use as an augment. As far as not having a play call that we as fans can sit back and say "here comes xxxx play", that's a good thing. If dumb fans would know what's coming, I think the other team's defense would, as well.

You know what I mean about play calling. just like NE you know what's coming, pick play to free Edelmann or Gronk up the seam.

I love passing just as much as the next man. Put aside 2014, which was the only year we actually ran the ball with purpose since Romo has been a Cowboy.

That kills me more than anything in the whole Romo era. Why can't he ever hike the ball with 12 seconds left on the play clock, keeping the defense off balanced

Because that's one of the strengths of Romo who can analyze a defense and make adjustments even up until the ball is snapped to take advantage of something he sees.

The fact we sometimes snap the ball with little time doesn't bother me all that much because it's not like we take a large number of delay penalties, etc.

It drive me batty as well, but it's actually intentional so the defense doesn't have time to counter. And you have to give him and Fred credit, they never get delay of games for it (even though it looks like they are late several times per game).

That always gets complained about, and it's always been the opposite of an issue for me. It's Romo against the defense, and Romo's long proven he can figure out what they want to do if you give him the time. And those last few seconds are crucial in the event they're trying to change something up at the snap. As long as he's winning so much more than he's losing, it's a complete non issue other than the fact that it makes fans nervous.

As to our identity, we're a pass-to-get-the-lead-run-to-end-the-game team on offense. On defense, we're a 4-3 bend-don't-break-keep-the-ball-in-front-maximize-takeaways team. Very little blitzing, keep guys available in coverage. Technique over tricks. Pretty simple.

Last year, of course, we were neither of those things, but that was the intention, anyway.

You asked for thoughts on what the identity of the team IS (not what I think it should be). It is that of a passing team as of right now. In 2014 we used the run game to open up the passing game and then used the running game to finish teams off. We didn't have that strength last year (for a multitude of reasons), and we don't have that strength right now. The draft could change that, or the draft could make us even more of a pass-first team.

Some people refuse to believe that Romo has any strengths.

Agreed. It doesnt seem orchestrated or smooth but more helter skelter, confused, and unorganized. Esp when he starts pointing and receivers have that huh look? Its almost like they are trying too hard to mimic payton manning and got carried away with it

I think the goal is more balance. They have the line now to do that. Hopefully the play calling will use what they have.
