Hey guys and gals, my daily commute has just increased to 3 hours round trip for the next 3-months. That means a lot of sports talk for me. But I leave in the Philly area and don't want to be subject to that mess. So I've downloaded two apps that will allow me to listen to Dallas area sports talk.
It seems to be 3 sports talk stations in the Dallas area. The Fan at 105.3, The Ticket at 1310 and ESPN at 103.3. So here are the questions;
In your opinions, what is the best a.m. drive time show and what is the best p.m. drive time show.
It also seems that there isn't one app that streams all three stations. So I have Radio.com for "The Fan" and Simple Radio for "The Ticket" and "ESPN Dallas". Does anyone if there is one streaming service that carries all three stations?
I've been listening to local Dallas sports talk radio since the Ticket started in the early nineties.
Originally the Ticket continued to be the best even after 103.3 ESPN and 105.3 The Fan started broadcasting; however, in recent years, especially since 105.3 The Fan became the Cowboys Flagship station, it has been the best overall.
The Fan is the only one with a live evening broadcast, but now they are often broadcasting Rangers baseball games in that time slot. The Ticket replays segments from earlier in the day and ESPN has some national shows on in the evening.
The Fan's worst show is the early morning show. The Ticket early morning guys are somewhat funny but not much on keeping up with the detail of sports except bicycle racing because they have a guy that although married to a woman, appears to be gay and follows bicycle racing.
When driving I flip between stations depending on their guests. I rarely end up on ESPN or stay there long.
The Fan hosts, other than the early morning guys stay updated on the details surrounding the Cowboys (and other sports). They spend a lot of time hanging around the teams and the guys from the Cowboys website like Broaddus and Mickey come on their station because they are the Flagship. Some of the guys like one guy on the G-Bag late morning show spends time watching film with Broaddus. Ben and Skin are a little silly, but they have the best access to the team and put in more effort and than most guys on the other stations.
On the Ticket Bob Sturm is excellent, but you can find most of his stuff in his blogs. Norm is the old guy in the late mornings. He is often silly and loses credibility because he thinks Rick "Goose" Gosselin is the man. He prefers to talk about gambling odds, horse racing and his vacations over current Cowboys details.
Summary: There is some silliness in all local sports talk radio. The really serious guys don't last in that format unless paired with a comedian. Overall the Fan is doing the best job of combining real sports information with the required humor with the exception of their early morning guys who are not good at either.
