What is the Greatest Hard Rock/ Metal Song Ever?

IMO the best metal song has to have a few rules.

Great guitar, screams, and undeniable intro, instantly recognizable
and lyrics that contain ethically questionable content.

War Pigs
  • 1970 Black Sabbath - Paranoid - Track 1
  • Hard to beat this one…

Running with The Devil
  • 1978 Van Halen - Van Halen - Track 1
  • I know Diamond Dave grew into a caricature of himself but in 1979 his voice and Eddie’s guitar work was ground breaking.

If you Want Blood (You Got It)
  • 1979 AC/DC - Highway to Hell - Track 8
  • Swan Song for Bon Scott

Seek and Destroy
  • 1983 Metallica – Kill’em All – Track 9
  • My personal favorite for this list.

Welcome to The Jungle
  • 1987 Guns-N-Roses – Appetite for Destruction – Track 1
  • Can you hear Axel scream? I still remember where I was the first time I heard this one.

Someone would play this whole album on the jukebox, at least once every night. Fantastic debut!

And IMO, Tool’s Danny Carey is one of the top 5 greatest drummers of all time. His switching of time signatures are next level…a true genius behind a drum kit.

Mike Portnoy with Dream Theater is also considered one of the greats and Tool’s Pneuma was his Drumeo challenge. The first link is Danny playing Pneuma during a concert and the second is Portnoy trying to learn the song. This isn’t one of Danny’s most complex arrangements but it gives a feel for the complexity. FYI, it does have some language as Portnoy gets a little frustrated.
