He got knocked into next Tuesday. Viscious (but legal) hit. I don't recall if he missed any plays as a result, but it was brutal and it could have been much worse.

I don't remember for sure, but I think it may have happened against the Colts. Somebody here will remember the details (although I'm not sure Newman does).

I remember the details, but its football, it happens. Honestly, to me, I see no reason why Newman can't return punts, it has been proven here plenty of times that injury risk doesn't increase for punt returners, a search will tell you that.

The issue to me is if we gain anything by having him back there. Sure we gain the "threat", but so far, it is a threat without big results. Last year, he was the same as Mewelde Moore, think that says alot. Just cause he is our best returner......doesn't mean he is a great returner.

Top punt returners?!?!?!

Try 19th genius!

At least you're consistant......

:lmao:

Newman also had fewer returns and was 1 out of 11 players who scored a TD on a punt return. Your looking at avg punt return yet Hester and Pac Man Jones in my opinion were the most effective return men and they rank 7th and 8th on the return avg but there was nothing avg about what they did.

Newman was 10th. PacMan and Hester were 1-2.

Edit: Ah, those are the ones who qualified.

any yet only 11 players in the NFL scored TD on punt returns and Newman was one of them.

Galactica brought up the 10.1 average like it made Newman a 'top punt returner'.

It doesn't.

newman is not going to be returning punts in pre season games and when they practice retruns they don't kill each other.
crayton would have a hard time being hurt on a punt return being as he never gets going anywhere.
stanback is the guy they see beig the returner at some point.
i have no problem seeing newman return punts during the season. he is too exciting to not take advantage of his ability in the right filed position. you can get hurt tackling as easy as returning

11 isn't exactly a small number. There were also 10 ahead (1 tied) with him in average. Think that means he falls in the same range.

Newman may not be "great" at PRs -- how does one define "great" anyway? -- but he's the best we've got. Which is what matters.

I agree but his avg is not why he is back there at times he is back there because he does have the ability to take it all the way.

I think it comes down to how you feel about the risk/reward of having him returning punts.

Some have no problem with it, and some - like me - hold their breath every time he's back there.

92 different players returned punts last year. 11 is not all that bad.

Yeah, its all about risk/reward, and other than that knockout hit that everyone wants to look at (of which he should have fair caught anyway), there is no proof to say he is anymore at risk.

Now of course I don't want to see him returning every kick, but I think using him every once in a while depending on situation is good. My only point is, Newman has yet to prove he is a top returner, cause no matter how much we want to think about him being a threat, the proof has to be in the pudding.

How do you define a top returner? Just so we know what he needs to do to becomes one.

Well, not always up to the returner of course, blocking and so on makes a difference. Just saying, the numbers just aren't there and those numbers from last year may not justify his presence back there....yet. Hoping he will do better this year, of course.
