I would say that 1 playoff win would be enough for the team to bring him back.

Another 1st round exit and all bets are off.

This is my thinking all along. One Playoff win he is back if not hes gone. For Big Mike even if gone he will get picked up rather
quickly by another team so thats just my opinion.

The only way they fire him if Jerry lands Payton.

I agree. Jerry would have to know that he can get Payton/Fangio to make a change.

But if the Cowboys don’t win a playoff game or two, I think Jerry will start looking into it.

I don't know. MM had 13 years in Green Bay and had a team with either Brett Farve or Aaron Rodgers, plus other Pro Bowl/All-Pro players, yet only won one Super Bowl. His regular season record overall was good in GB (125-77-2), his playoff record was 10-8 at GB, which is also good. But MM seems to be a coach that can get you to the job site but not always finish. There are many worse coaches out there though. I think he has done a good job overall. Can he get us a SB win? I don't know.

I do know that I don't want to relive the Dave Campo days. With the extra game now we could be 5-12 instead of 5-11 with someone like him.
Payton had what, 15+ years with Brees and only won one Super Bowl? If multiple Super Bowl wins are the standard, who is out there that is available and looking for a job?

I have to laugh about fans expectations.

MM is a good coach. I think he's done wonders for the cowboys.

Think about it this way... how much do you need to pay a guy to work under Jerry Jones and why would a good coach want to actually work under Jerry Jones?

There is the rub...

I think a humiliating loss in the 1st round of the playoffs would likely have the FO considering a replacement.

Depending upon who was available, and his chances of signing were assured, a HC change would be likely.

It was almost a done deal a few years ago before he signed an extension with NO. He's made it very public this year that the Cowboys are a team that he is highly interested in. Jerry is his drinking buddy they have a great relationship.
I could be wrong, but even if he did want to come here, I cannot see JJ giving up a first rounder for him.

Personally...

At least one playoff win and no unprepared team "no shows" / coaching gaffs / clock issues / etc causing a playoff loss.

Teams has to show up all 4 quarters and overtime if need be in the playoffs.

If you get beat that's one thing but don't lose the game... There is a difference.

NFC Championship game appearance would be nice.

But then again I realize Jerry has the last word...

Agree but I'm not so sure about KM if we go one and done in playoffs
Most "great" Offensive Coordinators alreay have a job as an Offensive Coordinator.

Before replacing KM, you have to consider the options for replacing him.

Teams often have to hire a coordinator that they really want as a Head Coach because they can't hire them as a Coordinator.

  • My opinion: Something is just not quite good enough about the overall run offense.
    • Teams like the 49ers have a big advantage because of their run blocking scheme.
      • In the Cowboys 2021 playoff game vs the 49ers, the Cowboys got gashed by the run by Elijah Mitchel and Deebo Samuel.
        • Mitchel was a 6th round rookie.
        • Samuel is not even a Running Back.
      • That combo is not better than Pollard/Zeke but...Mitchel/Samual 168 yards vs Pollard/Zeke 58 yards.
        • That's all about blocking scheme.
      • 49ers OLine in that game:
        • Trent Williams …… One 1st, one 2nd team All Pro
        • Laken Tomlinson …… One 2nd team All Pro (2013)
        • Alex Mack …… 3x 2nd team All Pro
        • Daniel Brunskill …… Only 1 start in 2022
        • Tom Compton …… Career Swing Tackle
      • Cowboys Tyron and Zack Martin: 11 All Pro and 16 Pro Bowl selections...
    • It was the same with the 2018 season Rams run offense.
      • They made it to the Super Bowl due to their version of the Zone Blocking scheme.

My floor is win one playoff game.

At minimum the Cowboys would have won 24 games the past two seasons so firing McCarthy would seem odd. He's a clear upgrade over the Clapper and the "hire Sean Payton" crowd needs to realize he's essentially McCarthy plus the added cost of draft compensation to New Orleans.

Barring a complete disaster in the playoffs it is hard to see him not being back next year. I really wouldn't mind a different OC...I just don't think Moore is getting the best out of the offense. Quinn has done an excellent job with the defense, but I am not sure if he can take them to the next level. There is a pretty decent roster here, and I think we have some financial flexibility. We are going to have to replace Tyron and Peters very soon, and then we have some big dollar resignings coming up. I think you go all in for one last year with McCarthy, and if it doesn't work, you clean house all the way around.

Remember, if he fires MM ( 2 years left on his contract ) he may also have to fire most or all of his assistants. Just don't Jerry's is ready to do that, especially considering the year MM has had. But as stated above, Kellen I'm not sure. They need to know if Dak has hit his ceiling before adding more years and lots $$$ to his current deal.

He wasn't a HOF QB at that time. He was just as you said playing well but not well enough for SD to keep him and his shoulder was injured. Again, no one thought of him as a HOF QB at that time only 2 teams were interested and they were both rebuilding franchises. Let's give Payton a little credit for helping Brees become the HOF QB he became with the Saints.

Every team should have been interested even without thinking HOF. He had shown he was a legit QB. Let's be clear, it was the Chargers fault his shoulder was injured. Certainly getting with a coach like Payton was fortunate. Breaks play a part in everyone's life.

He's done an outstanding job this year. I can only judge him on January 4th right now. If his team completely gets worked in the wild card round that changes things.

This, just because of two double digits years in wins cannot completely blind you to the facts of 2 years of one and done in the PO (if get put out this year). All you are doing is digging a ditch and once you get to deep and nowhere to throw the dirt it falls right back on your head.

Only guy i would want instead of Fat Mac would be Harbaugh. The kinds of things hed be able to do with this defense and running game, adding the discipline and toughness that Harbaugh always does, would imo take this team to the next level.
