What makes the Seahawks' Tampa 2 work?

Seattle controls both lines of scrimmage, they run the ball and don't force 40/50 pass attempt games on offense. They don't turn the ball over and they play smart Field Position Football. Basically, they do everything to help themselves on offense and nothing to hurt themselves. They don't make Wilson win every game with his arm.

You can play any scheme and win, as long as you can do those few things. It's a simple game when you come right down to it IMO.

Different personnel philosophy. While the league is filled with coaches trying to invent the new offensive scheme, Carroll has used a different personnel philosophy on defense. Nobody has caught up to it and he's been able to acquire talent cheaply because the rest of the league is going after the same type of players.

Look at the DB's.

Sherman: 6'3"
Browner: 6'3 to 6'4"
Chancellor: 6'4" 245 lbs

Earl Thomas is the only 'normal' sized DB, but he hits like a truck and has great range.

So you have corners that have no issues tackling WR's if the opponent throws a quick pass or a screen. They can press effectively and play jump balls effectively.

To counter the lack of speed in the secondary (outside of Thomas), they have a ton of speed at linebacker. Then the D-Line is a mix of speed and size. The DE's are (Irvin, Clemons and Avril) are extremely fast for DE's. The DT's are more size guys.

No other team in the league has this type of personnel. Tough to change things around when you're used to facing corners that are 5'8 to 6'0"

Basically just a better organization that turned themselves around pretty quick after they quickly disposed of their version of Jason Garrett.

Replacing Tim Ruskell with John Scneider was much more important than replacing Jim Mora with Pete Carroll

Kiffen initially stated he would play to the players strengths - he certainly has not done that.

Agree . Also offer that along the D line in particular we may be seeing how strong this unit is with the current players. Great against some competition, exposed against others.

None of them , minus Ware if you count him as D Lineman are high level talent that other teams wish they had.

Would be interesting to see if we had Rat/Spencer/ other injured D players available if we would be having the same problems, and if he would still run the scheme in it's current version

What do they have that we're missing and what tweaks to the scheme did they make? I see their corners up at the line of scrimmage a lot more. Is that something we can do here too or would that compromise the scheme?

Seattle's defensive personnel is far superior.

We need all 4 DLineman to be penetrators, disruptors. The Little inside handoff to Woodhead needed Hayden penetrating to prevent that. The little inside handoff took just enough time for Ware/ Wilbur to rush upfield and run inside them, whereas the DT if penetrating would bust that up in the backfield. SDiego apparently were using the center and a Guard to prevent Hatcher, but were able to stop Hayden one on one consistently. A combo of Ratliff and Hatcher would penetrate much more consistently. It was frustrating to see our DLine shut down by the 2nd of San Diego.

They have a great secondary but also have three Defensive Ends that are in the top seven of Pro Football Focus' rankings, the #4 ranked DT, and the #1 and #13 ranked 4-3 OLB. Bobby Wagner is a player that people lament that we didn't get, but he's probably their 8th best player on defense.

Those were the players I was talking about for the most part.

Hey, remember when Michael Brockers and Bobby Wagner instead of Morris Claiborne was a bullet we dodged? Good times.

The Cowboys DLine is Ware, Hatcher and a big group of castoff's from other teams.

Carter and Claiborne are getting most of the blame, but good QBs will pick apart the best coverage without pressure in their face.

Thing is, though, we were getting good pressure with that group until last week. Ware's back, Selvie's concussion, and doubling up Hatcher and we get pretty thin.

Rivers was the best QB that the Cowboys have played. He made some perfect precision passes against the Cowboys.

pressure has been better than it has been in years. plus if you add our hurt guys are they really that much better? they're probably bigger, that's it.

quoted for truth
when our FO understands these simple things, and develops a plan to implement them, we will contend consistently

until then we can be content with making excuses like: it is luck, the ball bounces differently for us, the refs are against us, NFL is an up and down league and righ now we just 'happen' to be down, we have injuries (as if other teams dont), etc

Our first step in following the Seattle Seahawks blueprint will be to copy their 2010 season by going 7-9 and winning the division
