FRISCO, Texas - By almost anyone's estimation, the Cowboys offensive line has under-promised and over-delivered through the first eight games of the season.

With so much uncertainty across the board before the season even began with the exception of All-Pros Zack Martin and Tyron Smith, the offensive line had its fair share of doubters before they ever left for training camp.

Then on the last day of training camp after returning from Oxnard, Calif., Smith went down with a non-contact injury. By the next morning it was said that he would miss the majority of the season with a hamstring injury.

But earlier this week, Cowboy chief operating officer Stephen Jones said on 105.3 "The Fan" that he expected Smith to return to action in about 3-4 weeks, meaning after Thanksgiving is a possibility.

I’m not really concerned or thinking about Smiths return. He likely won’t be back until the playoffs or a week or two before that.

Tyler Smith had played well, but I still slide him into LG. Steele has played well.

Tyron / Tyler / Biadasz / Martin / Steele

First…if they don’t play Tyron on Thanksgiving, he can take an extra two weeks. We probably see him that first Dec game.

If Tyler was able to hold down LT with minimal issue, I don’t see why he couldn’t move to LG flawlessly.

I just wonder if it doesn’t disrupt the cohesion of the unit, much like last year when Collins returned.

I’d really like to see Tyron and Tyler next to each other on the left side. I think they could be dominant in the run game.

Not as if Martin and Steele aren’t great run blockers themselves.

Coincidentally, what do we need to do to win? Oh right…run the ball. Maybe some defense.

This team has a chance. It’s better than last years IMO, or at least has a better shot at going deep into the playoffs.

IF and when. I'm not sure i make any changes, I keep TS77 as the swing tackle and IF in big game or the payoffs one of our tackles are struggling, then you make the switch.
I agree with you that “when” is premature. I’m still on “if” and don’t think it’s worth worrying about something that may not happen this year (or ever).

Then why were so many people wanting the Cowboys to make a trade to upgrade the OL?

Old cliché but they really did like their guys.

I think the OL has played better than expected. Tyron gives this team some insurance. Myself I don't see the Cowboys making changes to the OL and lose continuity that is required by an OL. As for why people wanted Dallas to make a trade? I really do not care what some people think, no doubt everyone has opinion but does not make the opinion right.

Cohesion is really important
I’d leave it as it is and have Tyron for depth with a few reps once healthy to get him back in playing shape for the playoffs. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

Article floating around earlier today said he was about a month away from being able to start practicing… so more like 6 weeks at minimum!

Ignore what Jerry says about Tyron's timeline. It has literally no correlation the actual timeline.

The reality is that Tyler and Steele just aren't that good as pass protectors. Tyler has a ton of potential and seems like the kind of guy who's going to reach his potential. I doubt Steele will get much better. ESPN's pass rush win rate has them both close to the bottom of the league, especially over the last few weeks. You can argue with the methods and stats, but the fact is that very good players won't grade out that poorly. Run blocking is a whole different story, of course, but you've got to have your best pass protectors out there.

If Tyron is healthy, you have to play him.

Based on how Martin & Steele have worked in tandem on run game, having the left side would give D coordinators another thing to worry about

Fake the run to one side and blow through the hole created on the real play design.

Counting on Tyron Smith to be healthy for even a week is fool’s gold at this point. I love the guy…one of my favorite Cowboys of the last decade. But he no longer possesses a body we can count on.
The first I would play Tyron is week 17. Give him 2 weeks to get in game shape before the playoffs. The money is gone at this point. Just get him ready for the playoffs if we are there!
