WHAT IS A SPORT AND WHAT ISN'T !!!!!

Football
Baseball
basketball
Hockey
Soccer/football ( don't want my E.U friends mad at me )
Lacrosse

NOT-

Tennis
golf
bowling
auto-racing
(and anything else a woman can do!!!!)

OK I know I'm going to get killed for that but I don't care!!!
There you go let it begin.......

First off, Tennis is most definitely a sport. Professional tennis players are in great physical shape.

I think that's one thing that sets apart "sports" and "skills...." Physical shape. If you can play the game at a high level without being in shape, I think that nudges it towards the skill side.

Professional golfers, bowlers, and drivers (or Poker Players :laugh2:) don't HAVE to be in great shape. Some are, some aren't. Usually the best are in good shape, but you can make a good living if you're not.

And I know it's hard to drive for 5 hours in a circle... But I've made road trips from Texas to LA, basically only stopping for gas. I didn't consider myself an athlete for doing so.:laugh2:

Well, seeing as how a "sport" is defined as a physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively, I would have to say that all of the above are, whether you deem it so or not, sports.

Some are obviously more rewarding to the male ego.

Tennis and golf are sports that I'm familiar with that involve tremendous skill and mental acuity to be competitive. Skateboarding is another.

You don't necessarily need to be 6'3" 250 lbs and run a 4.5 40 to play them, but they're sports nontheless. They simply have different skillsets and body types than say....football.

Did you do it at 200 mph with other drivers inches from your bumper for those 5 hours? The concentration it takes to do that for those 5 hrs is incredible. It's physically and mentally challenging......as are football, baseball, hockey, etc

all very good points,
But may i digress,
Until I see a women buckle up a chin strap or lace the skates or stand in there an hit a 90 mile an hour fast ball its kinda hard for me in my ( most chauvinistic ) way deem these others Sports.

HA...:D

This reminds of two things...

1. Womens rugby...I'm not sure the first part is fully appropriate. That is one nasty game.

2. Would you, in all of your masculine fervor, get out in a field with a bunch of women's field hockey players? I know i wouldn't. 11 mean, butch women + sticks = no thanks.

...but I see what you're saying. Obviously, womens' physical abilities preclude them from doing many of the things men do in sport. I think, however, that even by trying it is still by definition a "sport." The more obvious gender baised sports are just that...not conducive to a womens' physical build. It doesn't, however, (IMO) mean that they are the only true sports because women can't participate.

Nah, I was close. :D But it was 18 hours of driving.

Actually I need to amend my stance. I was going to cite a NASCAR driver like Jimmy Spencer, or a golfer like Craig Stadler, who are completely out of shape and look like they have no athletic ability... but for every one of those, you can name a Gilbert Brown, David Wells, Oliver Miller, etc. The large majority of professionals in these sports ARE in great physical shape... bowling though? I'm not so sure.

I guess they're all "sports," though some are more physically demanding than others...

How about, if you can get drunk and still play, then it's not a sport?? ;)

How about a woman hitting a 128 mph serve? Venus Williams did it in the French Open. The fastest clocked men's serve ever is just 27 mph more.

Sitting in a car for 4 hours isnt a sport. If it is, I am an amazing athlete for the time I drove 16 hours straight....AND I had to make more than left turns.

I'll ask you the same question:

I guarantee that you wouldn't touch one of Venus Williams' 128 mph serves. You probably wouldn't touch one of my serves, and I only clock at 105.

Still faster than a Randy Johnson fastball. And I could even aim for your head for effect.

That being said I never played Tennis, so Of course I wouldn't touch one of those serves, But I'm sure there other (qualified hobbyists) that rank up there that could There is no way your going to convince me tennis is a Sport, Sorry just the fact alone that you play it should make that clear. how many people can do what I deemed Sports at a professional level answer Not many. Not on a Sunday not on a leisure day no way, no how !!! Many people couldn't bowl a perfect game either So what.. again in Tennis we saw Billie Jean king beat (whatever that loser's name is) I cant recall. Means nothing go tackle the worst RB in the league then talk to me. Stay in nets to an Al Mcgensse slap shot hAHAHAHa yeah right hard urethane object coming at you not a furry yellow ball
Oh by the way Tony Romo almost qualified for the Golf tournament ( that makes it a Sport, ) Please. Sorry Just a difference of opinion

When Venus Williams or Tiger Woods can do what Tony Romo can do adequately then we will talk

WOW... don't even let someone try to convince you. Why did you start this thread?

Look... I can play tennis recreationally. I'm not on a professional level, not even close. I can also go play basketball recreationally. Same thing. I'm not on a professional level or even close.

So are you saying that anything you can play recreationally is not a sport? Of course not, that would be ridiculous. Cause you can go play football with your buddies, but it doesn't make football any less of a sport.

The professionals are the best of the best. Guys like you and me aren't, but the fact that we play doesn't take away from what they can do. And of course not many people can do what they can do. That's why they get paid millions to do it. There are literally thousands of guys trying to make it on the ATP tour. Those guys are good, just not good enough.

Billie Jean King's match with Bobby Riggs was a joke and a publicity stunt. BJK was in her prime and Riggs was over the hill. It would be like Annika Sorenstam taking on Arnold Palmer. That is irrelevant to the conversation.

I guess ignorance won't be reasoned with.
