Nah, Get in there and take a Randy Johnson fastball then you would impress me, Tennis is for ---!!!

I've played and taught competitive tennis since I won a wooden Stan Smith in elem school. I play or "hit" a minimum of, 2-4 hours, 3-4 days a week.

Trust me tough guy, when I crank a 125 mph serve into your nether regions, you'll be "impressed"!

WOW... don't even let someone try to convince you. Why did you start this thread?

Look... I can play tennis recreationally. I'm not on a professional level, not even close. I can also go play basketball recreationally. Same thing. I'm not on a professional level or even close.

So are you saying that anything you can play recreationally is not a sport? Of course not, that would be ridiculous. Cause you can go play football with your buddies, but it doesn't make football any less of a sport.

Well Look, I really feel its also a Team thing as well, Im sure tennis some might think a sport but why not figure skateing? I really dont feel thats a Sport either I understand what your saying about recreational play, But You also have to factor the TEAM. That makes a Sport.

The professionals are the best of the best. Guys like you and me aren't, but the fact that we play doesn't take away from what they can do. And of course not many people can do what they can do. That's why they get paid millions to do it. There are literally thousands of guys trying to make it on the ATP tour. Those guys are good, just not good enough.

Billie Jean King's match with Bobby Riggs was a joke and a publicity stunt. BJK was in her prime and Riggs was over the hill. It would be like Annika Sorenstam taking on Arnold Palmer. That is irrelevant to the conversation.

I guess ignorance won't be reasoned with.

Look convince me. I happen to be from an old school of thought

What a chauvinistic thread... No other comment is necessary.

Lets be Honest, I don't feel I'm chauvinistic. I think women are probably stronger then men in allot of ways, I wouldn't want to bear a child, especially carry it around for nine months. And then I wont go near giving birth. Its a nothing thing in Sports yes, some women have great gifts but I don't think its physically possible for then to compete with ( the Major ) Sports.
Honestly I don't mean to insult women please take no offense.

Well if I take a slapshot at your nether regions ( cup and all) Youll be impressed.

Thats great its still not done on a team, I'm not saying that tennis players are not somewhat athletic they are but so are Motocross bike drivers, and figure skaters, Not a sport, No reason for the tough guy comment. I guess you took the tennis are for ... as an insult. just a bit of sarcasm

1) That's why football, baseball, basketball, and hockey, etc. are called "Team sports." Doesn't mean that non-team sports aren't sports.

2) Tennis, golf, and racing all to some extent CAN be team sports. Singles in tennis, in and of itself, isn't necessarily a team sport on the court, but I played Team Tennis for years, I have a state championship ring that says it's a team sport... And doubles is most definitely team oriented. Golf has teams also... Ryder Cup, etc. Racing teams race against each other, but also help each other out.

I'm gonna go play some Team Halo... I guess that's a sport.;)

I had a discussion yesterday with a few Bowlers and I told them its not a sport. I also was listening to Ferrell ( for those of you with Sirius Radio ) you know who he is, He's the man. anyway,I would like to see what peoples opinion is on here. So fire away
WHAT IS A SPORT AND WHAT ISN'T !!!!!

Football
Baseball
basketball
Hockey
Soccer/football ( don't want my E.U friends mad at me )
Lacrosse

NOT-

Tennis
golf
bowling
auto-racing
(and anything else a woman can do!!!!)

OK I know I'm going to get killed for that but I don't care!!!
There you go let it begin.......

I agree with everything on your list except for Tennis. That definately qualifies to me. And as for racing, I think it qualifies as long as it is designated an AUTO sport.

To me, sports have 2 base needs.

1. They are athletic, and involve physical skill. (Unless designated as an auto sport).

2. There is direct competition between 2 individuals, or teams. And by direct, I mean that what one person/team does has an impact on how the other person/team performs. Activities in which everyone's performance is completely 100% up to them, such as golf (which I don't feel meets criteria #1 either) don't count as sports.

And I know it's hard to drive for 5 hours in a circle... But I've made road trips from Texas to LA, basically only stopping for gas. I didn't consider myself an athlete for doing so.:laugh2:

Your Texas to LA trip was probably more intense, unlike Nascar drivers you probably had to make some right turns along the route. :laugh2:

OK what about Surfing, You have to be athletic and have tremendous physical skill

for point 2- what about table tennis-I don't know Tennis you need Physical skill and athletic but its really one on one, ( don't give me the doubles wrap )

To me racing is not a sport or should I say they are not athletes.

The only racing I see as a sport is when you are the actual power propelling yourself. You are running, swimming or riding a bicycle (not motorcycle).

Sitting in a car, whether you are going 200 mph with a bunch of people around you or not, sitting on the back of a horse, sitting on a motorcycle and so on.

Not a sport or more to the point not a sport done by athletes.

In those areas the car is the one doing all the work, the horse is doing the work, the motorcyle is doing the work. Sure the rider or driver may be mentally exhausted. But so what, I can get mentally exhausted reading some threads on this forum...does not make me an athlete.

Heck IMO bowling is more athletic, at least in that sport you are actually propelling the ball yourself instead of an object like a Horse or engined vehicle propelling you.

In golf at least you are propelling the ball yourself.

So I get in a car, sweat my butt off, drive fast with people all around me. Wooo call the press I did that multiple times while driving a bulky hummer ambulance in the middle of an 8 lane section of Seoul Korea. Where you could literally (and I did it once) stick your hand out the window without fully extending your arm and touch buses and trucks as they zipped by you or you zipped by them. Where you got a guy in the back that tried to OD and now is throwing up everywhere. Got to the destination, jumped out, smoked a cigarette and was shaking like a leaf...but it did not make me an athlete.

I whole heartedly disagree that racing isn't a sport but we'll just have to agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Tennis is definately a sport, so is softball in my opinion, especially fast pitch.

No way is race car driving a sport, yes its difficult and yes they have good endurance but its definately more mentally tough then physically in my opinion.

What about Motocross? I rode for four years as a teenager, and let me tell you...you most assuredly have to be an athlete to be competetive. The bike is still providing the power, but an average man's body wouldn't last three laps.

The point I'm trying to make, is that there are way too many variables when one is trying to determine whether something is more of a sport than another based upon generic prerequisites. Everyone is going to have a different perspective based upon their own abilities and interests...including ilovejerry.

I played football, soccer, baseball, wrestled, golf, and tennis in high school...and excelled at all of them (unfortunately, I always seemed to be the second best in each). However, I'm also an avid skateboarder, surfer, snowboarder, and MXer...and there is no way that any of those are "less of a sport" to me. I've never tried harder at anything in my life than to become a good skateboarder, and I just can't. Whether its because I'm 6'1" 205 or because I'm a big *****, I don't know...but I do know I have as much respect for the guys who have become the best at skateboarding as I do for the likes of Randy White. It's just as physically and mentally taxing as any team sport, and they've reached a pinnacle that few people will ever achieve, regardless of thier chosen endeavor.
