i'm rewatching some of the game this morning. there were guys open. romo was just rattled and dropped his eyes instead of releasing the ball.
Romo has been doing this off and on his entire career. He's had some pretty bad OL over the years so I guess I can't blame him. I have not rewatched the game, but in OT it appeared like all the routes were down field and there was noone available for Tony to dump off to. Don't know if that's poor coaching or poor blitz recognition from the players.
I would think simple drags, slants, and hitches would be effective.
Also, i'd love love love love LOVE to see Dallas use Dez like Denver uses Demaryius Thomas and throw some of those bubble screens. Those would help keep a defense honest.
There was one screen pass all night and that was when Weeden was in the game. I rarely see Romo throw screen passes, does he not like them? He can change the play at the LOS and he saw blitz after blitz after blitz. Why would he not throw ANY screen passes?

Screen passes slow a blitz down faster than anything, we ran like one all night......................LOL
You don't see Manning or Brady getting in those situations without making the Defense pay....should have been game on instead of lights out.
Even on the play when Romo was smacked up the middle, it looked like Murray opted to side step/slip the blitz and step aside for a quick dump off, a reasonable and effective ploy when the blitzing player isn't accounting for you as a receiver. Unfortunately, when Tony saw the DB, he didn't look for Murray, he turned his back and dropped to his knees. You can't beat any blitz that way....but it is what it is, so run the ball.
Screens, bubble screens and draws.
On some of them, I think it was because he was either a) confident that his linemen, back, tight end would pick them up, which they failed to do, or b) confident that his receivers would quickly beat coverage, which didn't happen much either.
The best thing Dallas could have done, especially in the second half, is hit the Commanders over and over again with the run to get the safeties to stop blitzing the edges. It was a poorly called game by Linehan, who seemed to believe our plan for beating the blitz would eventually pay off despite the overwhelming evidence that it wasn't.
More concerning to me is that they often brought a max blitz that created a problem. The big concern is that Romo was so slow to try to get rid of the ball while under a max blitz. It seemed like he was still hoping that he would have time to wait for plays to develop.
Well after Romo started moving a TE inside for Max Protect they backed off the all-out and came with less....there are many plays that destroy that Defense, this team doesn't have football leadership because of one person keeping that from happening over the last two decades. You dont have time for double move fades and any route longer than 5 yards. On a slant, if they drop out, your throwing it to a LBer wearing red. Pick six comes to mind. Not saying your wrong, just my thoughts on the matter. The max protect might help. it might not. In a ferocious blitz like the Commanders brought, you dont have a lot of time, certainly cant hit your third read, maybe not your second. Just saying you have to get the ball out like right now. Yesterday even.
