What Separates The Cowboys From The Super Bowl Teams?

http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2016/2/7/10929876/article

The Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos will take part in Super Bowl 50 on Sunday night. The other 30 NFL teas will be looking on, in search of areas of focus in need of development to put them in position to be one of those two in the game.

For Dallas, 2015 was basically a lost year offensively because of the injuries to the two most important players, but a quick look at just a few numbers defensively really paint the picture.

The most impactful plays an NFL defense can make are, interceptions, fumble recoveries, sacks and defensive touchdowns. Let's compare the Cowboys' numbers in these categories with the Super Bowl participants.

Fumble Recovery/Interceptions/Sacks/Defensive Touchdowns/Total
Dallas 3/8/31/1/43
Denver 13/14/52/5/84
Carolina 14/24/44/4/86

Looking at these numbers it becomes fairly obvious, and confirms what we believed through the season. The Cowboys defense, while playing very well overall, just was not making those impactful plays that the most successful teams in the league were able to generate. If Dallas is going to improve their performance on defense and as a team as a whole, they will need their defense to make more of these impact plays. It is quite likely that Dallas will be seeking to add a playmaker to the defense at every level, the defensive line, linebackers, and the secondary, in attempt to raise their impact total.

One other interesting aspect of this particular comparison, is how different the Denver and Carolina defenses are in philosophy, scheme and personnel, while producing almost identical impact play totals. Denver is an attacking 3-4 team, coached by Wade Phillips and built around their edge rush and their secondary, those players make passing against them extremely difficult. Carolina on the other hand is a 4-3 team coached by Sean McDermott, that is built on the strength of the defensive tackles and linebackers who are great against the run and in coverage. Two different philosophies, the same result - defenses that impact the game through big plays.

If one can't enter discussion with big boy pants on, then turn right around...go to Walmart for adult diapers.

I stop reading when I hit the stat line. Do you think a Panthers or Broncos D would have help the team this year? This team offense could not cough up 10 points aganist some very sub par teams. Having an elite D is great but our D was good enough to win us 13 games this year if we had better offensive production.

Apparently don't display much knowledge about team goals and accomplishments that can be achieved...and applying accurate information. Pay attention to what is presented and how change can come into the picture. No, this team was NOT top shelf. Crying in one's beer doesn't improve the look.

Keeping Romo and other play makers healthy is the first thing that that comes to mind. That alone would have been enough to make the playoffs this year. Being a Super Bowl team will probably require the Boys to get better on defense. I look forward to seeing the Cowboys make these correction and make the next step forward.

Two teams with elite defenses went to the super bowl. Manning was a Trent Diller clone this time around. A bus driver for a team that had a defense that could shut down anyone and force TOs.

If the Cowboys can have a defense 75% of either team, and a healthy Romo we could go far.

A quality defensive tackle, linebacker, and cornerback added would go a very, very long way at bringing this defense together.

Yeah, we all know the defense didn't make enough plays. That stat line is just ugly.

Just blow the cap on Hardy, Trumaine Johnson, and Malik Jackson.

This draft is deep at DT and secondary, take another one of each and the defense is looking a lot better next year.

Good points. Dallas has a shortage of playmakers on offense. Murray had his faults , but he was a playmaker that wasn't replaced . Dez is the only playmaking WR, but he was injured this year and the same can be said for Romo. This team needs a starting quality RB and at least one more WR.

Having a veteran playmaker at QB who is truly elite may have made a difference. We had a choke artist and a grandpa at QB last night. Put John Elway/Aikman at the helm of either of those teams and the outcome is totally different.

It would help, but our defense needs many positions.

Yes, but without solid QB play it would have still been a non-playoff team.

Coaching....It's that easy of an answer. We coach our players to play it safe..not lose. Call it what you want..."bend but don't break football"...but it's a losing formula. Been that way for 20 years now.:(

The difference last night was Sacks an Turnovers. The two things the Cowboys need to improve the most. The big question is how do they address the problem, do they use the Draft/FA or coaching.

Wow. Think about it.
We would have been thoroughly destroyed yesterday if it was us instead of the Panthers in there.

Poor coaching, soft players, dumb players and Romo getting sacked repeatedly. I would probably still be in shock today! Would last for a long time!!
