You could view this as being a good year to take BPA based on how the offseason has been handled. At 24 there’s a possibility that the best DT in draft falls to you, a receiver talent like BTJ is available, the top LB should still be on the board, maybe JPJ or Barton are there, and I’d expect at least a trio of OT possibilities could be had.
To your point though, I think the preference for the first selection will weigh heavily in favor of taking an O-line representative. What will be intriguing is if the Centers are off the board will the Cowboys genuinely take BPA or stay the pick a position group course by selecting a potential high-upside tackle like a Mims or Guyton, all the while accepting that immediate plug and play success is not likely. The closer we get to the draft, the more I believe this will be the course pending the availability of JPJ or Barton @ 24. I really don’t believe the Cowboys want to ask their potential All-Pro Guard to kick out to tackle.
I think their strategy will be a hybrid of need and BPA. The first round may be somewhat in favor of an O-line selection, but after that, I’d expect we see them play their board per BPA. However, I’m sure the guys have a few players that if they’re there at 24, they take them, and they’ll figure out the rest as they go.
