What to expect from the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1 of free agency

If you're looking for an NFL front office executive who loves thrashing about in free agency, turn away from Stephen Jones.

Never a fan of that portion of the Dallas Cowboys' offseason, Jones has made it clear time and again he understands fully what the dynamic of free agency is -- which is why he's so hellbent on avoiding falling into its trap so willfully.

With recent news surrounding the freedom of big fish like running backs Adrian Peterson and Jamaal Charles, Jones was asked if the Cowboys had any want of doing a 180-degree about face on their recently frugal strategies.

His answer was as clear as a crystal chandelier: No.

“I’ve said it always about free agency: Sometimes you’re required to use it, but you better go in with your eyes wide open that you’re overpaying," Jones said from the NFL Combine, via Dallas Cowboys Senior Writer Rob Phillips. "You’re going to pay good players like they’re great, average players like they’re good, below average players like they’re average. It’s just not a great way to build a football team.

"But, sometimes there [are] situations that do present themselves and you’ve got to be ready to do that if you see the right value there.”

I think Stephen is correct in his assessment. I think Cowboys will make some moves but it is not a bright idea to go over spending in FA, it seldom works out the way the buyer hope is will.

Looking at teams in the NFC East each year we hear all this whining about how Philly, NY and Washington went out and bought players and Cowboys did not do nearly as much yet in the end NY, Philly and Washington have not benefited. I watch team like Jacksonville spending big and they still suck, Miami went out and paid big for Suh yet are still no closer to being a top team. I have no issue of using FA but frankly it seldom works out where the money spent equals the value of the player

I can't blame them for not making any moves. None of the guys we lost so far were exceptional players. And we've seen the caliber of players getting scooped up in free agency aren't very exceptional either (heck, 4 of our own guys got paid more than they probably deserve). No sense spending big money on someone who isn't any better than the guy he's replacing. That being said, our issues on defense were a lack of top-end talent. Even if we retained the 3 guys we lost or replaced them with similar players, we'd still be stuck with the same mediocre defense we had last year. We need a few elite players but there aren't any elite talents in free agency and we're likely not getting a rookie at #28 to come in and light up the league on Day 1. There's really not much we can do other than hope some of our young guys develop into stars. Sounds like the same story year after year.

They'll make moves that round out the roster so they have more freedom to get BPA in the top of the draft. Later half they will again round out the roster

This is what I see happening. I don't see much lost so far. The guys we lost on defense were older and no better than average. I see more opportunities for guys like Maliek, Irving and Heath with their departures. The only issue I see coming from losing all of our defensive free agents is it creating a big need at CB since we'd be left with 3 guys on the roster. I see us resigning Carr and probably a cheap veteran WR and going into the draft looking for BPA. I wouldn't be surprised if we draft a TE or LB in the 1st if they're the best available.

Most the answers to our defensive and all problems have been right there in FA for us. The problem is we mismanage the cap and we cant sign the people we want.

Who was available that was an immediate upgrade? We needed an elite RDE or 3DT. The guys we lost were nothing special. And Claiborne is probably one of the most talented CBs available. Just probably not worth the price. There were no good safeties on the market.

With Romo leaving we can make cap room for anyone we want to. I just think there's no one out there right now that Stephen thinks
we absolutely need to have at inflated prices.

Too deep a defensive hole to be competitive in the playoffs this year. Develop younger prospects and or trade for the future.

I feel like we have been the Texas Rangers of football lately. Full of promise, but nada.
Hopefully it changes this year for the Cowboys. I have given up hope on the Rangers.

i honestly think this team is embracing a defensive rebuild. next 3 years get low draft positions and build the d line like it did with the O. i dont see us going anywhere or even making the playoffs baring getting some huge steals in the draft that can come in and be studs on day 1. in 3 years hopefully our cap will be better too. the team is rebuilding in my mind.

LOL.

Team just went 13-3, has their young QB and TB and the league's best OL and we are rebuilding?

Geezus. If this team doesn't make the playoff the next couple of years or gets bounced early again in the playoffs the next couple of year, heads should ********* roll. That would be a screw up of epic proportions.

I would sign Poe, I would have signed one of those great corners that Either New England or the Bills signed, and I would have gone after Calais or the Philly DE that just got let go.

I would cut Crawford and trade Romo. Not sure that would do it but then again I am not the one that mismanaged the cap.

You sign those three guys and you have the potential for one heck of a defense.

I would also sign Claiborne. 4 million per year I would do it. When healthy he is a top corner from what I saw last year.
