What would be your philosophy when drafting 5-7th round picks

I'm not sure I follow you. It's irrelevant if it's late in the draft, you would still take the best player available.

That would always be my philosophy.

From you're replies on the broad you seem to be more informed than an average fan. I don't know if you coach (maybe HS or Just you're kids team) but most coaches like certain type of players. Outside of bpa is their a "certain type of player physically you gravitate to"? like I said Parcells liked 4 year QBs.

If we had the 3 7th rounders I'd look for a OG that was heavy but had quick feet. And like someone else said I would stock up d linemen not because of last season but to give Rod more rotation

Keep doing whatever it is that we're doing because it seems to be working... Look for players that have fallen for minute concerns, like say if Michael Sam dipped to the late 6th/7th, or if a player had a few injuries in college but otherwise would be a 2nd/3rd round prospect.. Always grab a QB in the 4th-7th if you believe he has the potential to become a franchise QB, disregard need or BPA. That's my philosophy at least. Obviously don't draft three in a draft, but Aaron Murray should be drafted.

Draft for need while taking a chance on intangibles that can't be measured ... along with intangibles that can be calculated.

Draft the highest guy on my board.

I'm on board with that but then I guess the question focuses on how you construct your board.

I kinda agree with fuzzy as well. It's a shot in the dark in the last rounds.

Personally I think your board building approach may change as the draft gets further along.

At some point there's not gonna be a clear cut better athlete or player. Gotta start bringing in other considerations.

As TD said famously they cut 6th rounders everyday and with us having 2 7th round picks. What would be you're philosophy when it comes to drafting a player past the 5th round. Would you use part of Parcells plan with Qbs and lookfire seniors?Would you go the Al Davis route and go fastest? Would you do the Seattle thing and try for long, tall DB's or would you do something different?

We can all say best player available but we all know that's a bit of a lie after the 3rd round. If they were the best they wouldn't be going so late. So how would you try to Draft late round picks. Being the high turnover rate you can go off script and no one can really judge you.

they would have to be either physically gifted, and we take a chance on making them good football players, or have produced in college, but don't have the measurable or tweeners like DE, DT but doesn't fit one or the other.

i'd say just take the highest left on your board and let it go.

if you ask how you construct your board, you do that for the first part of the draft also. but to me, in the 1st part, that's when i gamble a bit more. later on, no one ever said we wasted a 6th round pick that i know of. but those picks can pay off.

If I am the FO, after Day two, I keep everyone up and determine the positioning for Day 3 (you would think that happens now, but who knows). The order should be somewhat in stone, with a little wiggle room:

1) We are going to have 6 picks in the 7th round (our current 3 plus likely 3 comp picks)...I would have my list ready and check them off as they fall...
2) Have a list of "Troubled" guys ready on your internal board (like the burfict's of the world); if we get close to them, have the decision ready to go
3) Since the team will have so many picks in the 7th, I would trade one or two of the tradeable picks (Can't trade comp picks) to either move into the 6th or get a 6th/7th in next year's draft - keep the train rolling
4) I would take a QB this year in some capacity; I have wanted Murray on the team, and if he is there in round 5 or later, you take him....if not, take a chance on someone in the 7th (Fales perhaps if he fales, I mean falls)
5) My list would be rife with guys that had some type of issue (size, injury concern, perceived personal issue, etc.); this is the "take a chance" area of the draft

At 5, I'd still go BPA. But at 6 and 7 and rookie FAs, I'd go for intangibles: intelligence, strong character, leadership, strong work ethic. These are the guys that drop because they lack the physical tools, but they're usually the only ones who make it work. Plus, they'll do any role, they're coachable, and they're guys you root for. Even Burfict figured that out. If he didn't, he'd be out of the league now. Brady is the best example. Romo is a good example too.

In this draft I would spend heavily early on the trenches, especially dline and the team needs depth in the interior oline. I'm hoping for a trade down in the first and at least three of the first four picks going to supplement those two spots on the team. WR/CB both have tremendous depth which means you could easily find a good player at either of those positions later so I wouldn't overspend early on either.

I don't subscribe to the BPA philosophy especially early in the draft because frankly I don't believe that exists. The Seattle Seahawks aren't taking a QB, RB, S or probably LB in the first round and Dallas isn't about to spend a #1 on a center or cornerback.....at least I hope not. You match need with BPA at positions of need and go from there. Later on in the draft I think it's much easier to take the best player on your board because frankly it's all a crapshoot, but I bet there will be plenty of WR's/CB's high on the board later on so they will get picked by default anyhow.

I believe we have 3 7th round picks. And should get at least 2, if not 3 comp picks.

Times have changed, when the draft was 12 rounds, people would think yu could still find a quality player in rounds 5, 6 & 7. The scrubs were in the 10th, 11th & 12th.
Now the scrubs are considered the 6th & 7th rounds. But yet some quality players can still be found as FA's [Romo]
Remember Larry Brown, he was a 12th round pick, or was it an 11th.

Anyway, always go with BPA at that point if you want to build depth, which is what we need.

I don't understand this. There's going to be BPA in any given rounds, no?

I'd lean heavily towards players from the SEC, Big 10, Big 12 and Pac 10.

Draft guys with high physical upsides in the late rounds.

I don't see the point in spending the time and roster spot developing a low upside player. I would avoid the Caleb McSurdy types.

Character or injury risk players would be OK in the late rounds.

Examples:
DE Aaron Lynch (Character)

DE Larry Webster (really small college)

Picture being in the war room on the last day of the Draft. Rod pitching a d lineman because we only drafted 2. Garrett is pitching a OG and Bill C backs him. Kiffin is pitching a safety from an SEC school and Scott L. wants a RB to push Murray and commit to running the ball. You coming in hear with BPA is weak. This post was to get you all to add depth to your philosophy not scream BPA like the talking heads at the 4 letter

1. Draft BPA
2. If BPA is a wash, draft developmental players that have strong upside or good combine numbers.

I like the idea of bringing in guys with character issues (i.e. Burfict) - if it works out, great you got a 2nd-3rd round value in the 5th. If it doesn't? So what? It's only a 5th.
