2nd this year and 1st next year. That would be 3 picks in the top 2 rounds and I would draft an OL with 2 of the 3 picks. Let Orton start this year and not really worry about how bad it gets. I would also draft a QB this year in the mid rounds that I thought could be the long term backup. Next year I would target a franchise QB with an additional 1st in case I wanted to move up to get him.

If team won't worry about win/loss results, then why keep Ware, Witten? Might as well trade them too since the team will be in a rebuild mode.

Because there's another season after this one and if my scenario played out and they drafted correctly, the OL would be fixed and you would have your franchise QB. I think all of us here would love to be in that position one year from now. Orton is a legitimate NFL QB and a team could do worse. If he has a good year, great, but if the season goes south, it's not the biggest deal in the world especially since your looking to draft a franchise QB in a QB rich draft. I certainly didn't mean tank on purpose, just that if it went bad with Orton, so be it.

Provided that he would be willing to sign a deal with them (and why wouldn't he, given the fact that he'd get to throw to Larry Fitz and play golf year round...)

Romo to Arizona for the 7th overall pick, a 3rd rounder, and a second rounder in 2014 that turns into a first if Romo hits some performance standards in 2013.

No brainer for either team.

That's a very realistic scenario.

I'd take that and run, as well.

Been saying for weeks now that if we trade Romo, I'd be all for trading Ware and Witten also.

It would be a no brainer... except that JJ is the GM and it's a little late with all the restructuring and frachising Spencer imo.

Only way this would happen is if they honestly feel Orton can get the job done and Romo or his agent does something that JJ doesn't like or agree with during negotiations.

Remember that we're not talkin real scenarios here. Just the minimum it would take to convince you to trade him. I know AZ isn't calling begging to give two 1st but that's what I would need to pull trigger

In all honestly, no one would give us a 1st or 2nd. Romo is not as highly valued outside the Cowboys and its fans. A 3rd rounder is the highest we could get.

If Alex Smith can land a very high #2, Romo warrants at least a #1 and #2.

In both the Alex Smith and Carson Palmer deals, their original teams had zero leverage and still landed a quality return.

Too much is made out of Romo having only one year left under contract. If Arizona gets Romo they have the option of franchising him. There is no way Romo is gonna roll the dice and play it year-to-year if they offered him a long-term deal. Plus, find me a better situation for him than the Cardinals even if he went total free agent route.

I bet Minnesota would send us one of their #1s + maybe Cassell or a 3rd rounder for Romo.
They'd use the remaining 1st rounder on a WR (Tavon Austin or other) to pair with Greg Jennings...and be off to the races.
Minny would have Peterson, a good oline, Romo, Jennings, Austin, a good TE, a solid defense. Look out.
Jerry would not make that trade though. The Minny number 1 is too low for starters.

Not gonna happen, but 1 1st-round pick, a 2nd-round pick and a conditional 3rd-pick if Romo does not thow an interception in a critical game.

That's lot of ifs. And no, I don't have faith in Cowboys management to hit on all the need drafts, especially getting a franchise QB. Getting a franchise QB isn't that easy, if it was all 32 teams would have a franchise QB. If Cowboys didn't get lucky and ended up with Romo, they are probably still looking for a franchise QB. Also, if they did get a franchise QB, he probably need couple of years before making an impact, and by then Ware and Witten are most likely in end of their career.

Just out of curiosity since we seem to have a lot of scenarios being tossed around that possible trades (however unlikely) might be happening. I just want to know what all the people who want Romo traded would expect/want at LEAST for Romo. Personally I don't want him to be traded but if AZ called up and offered their 2013 and 2014 firsts I would have a hard time declining. But that would be the least I would take. Not saying we would ever get that call.

Ps I know this is a total "offseason" topic but I'm bored and want to know what the romo hater think he's worth even though they hate him

At least 2 #1 picks, with one of them being a top ten this year.

Or we could just stay on the same path which has taken us nowhere. If you have no faith in management then why bother participating in the conversation because everything anyone says could always go back to management will never get it right. I have faith that with 3 picks in the top 2 rounds this year and 2 1st rounders next year, that they could significantly improve the OL and find a QB in next year's deep QB class. Would they? Who knows but this thread is about what I would want for Romo and what I would do with the picks that came back for him.

You sure? Wouldn't the difference in their respective abilities be offset by the fact Romo'll be 33 in a month while Smith is still only 28. Maybe you could argue Romo doesn't have the mileage for his age bc he sat his first few years.

If I was the cowboys GM I wouldn't take less than 2 firsts and a conditional mid rounder for Romo. Otherwise hes a cowboys for life.

I'm pretty sure if Romo is traded, his last 3 years on his contract do not void. He would have 4 years and 52m left on his contract, but none of it guaranteed. The new team would have no salary cap hit, but the Cowboys would take a cap hit of 14.5 m for 2013.
