Pat Summerall calling an NFL game.

Limited Commercials..

You could actually hit the qb and receiver back in the day...in fact it was the most exciting play in the game when a qb or receiver got demolished.
And we knew what a catch was because it was simple to remember. Two feet, one knee, or a butt cheek. Nothing complicated and everyone knew on the first look.

I miss the commercial where the football player gets clobbered. While laying down on the field, his training staff asks him to say his name. He sits up and responds with "I'm Batman!!!!"

The NFL Today open and the crew - Musburger, Cross, Phyllis George and Jimmy The Greek.

Monday Night Football with Frank, Howard and Dandy. Howard's halftime highlights.

Summerall and Brookshier, then Madden.

Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen. Bryant Gumbel doing halftime on NBC.

Howard Cosell with MNF halftime highlights was always fun. Sometimes it was the only video I saw of a Cowboy game.

Loved Merlin Olson and Dick Enberg on NBC and Summerall and Madden on CBS. Brent Musberger and Jimmy the Greek on NFL Today.

There was a different look to the TV coverage too, Back in the day the camera focused in tighter than it does now. Hardly ever saw the safeties. Sometimes not even the wide receivers and corners. The linemen and the offensive backfield filled the screen.

Remember having to look at the first down markers on the sidelines in the days before the yellow line graphic?

My memory may be bad, but I'm the pre-replay days there were fewer bad calls or plays that would be overturned today. The famous bad calls like the Mike Renfro catch stick out but most games didn't have plays like that.

Watching Bradshaw and the Steelers in the early game then Staubach in the late game, then Dolphins and Oilers on Monday night.

Much less football and sports news than today, but somehow it seemed like more. Anyone else feel that way?

Another thing is that the score and game clock was not always shown. The announcers would say the time remaining sometimes but it wasn't always visible like today.
