A Mt Rushmore band for me, in contemporary music, with Sufjan, LCD Soundsystem, Radiohead

Trout...what do you think of Sufjan’s Carrie & Lowell?

One of the greatest albums ever, IMO...but definitely not background music or party music! It carries to a heavy-hearted place.

Happy birthday, my friend. I'm elated to know you're a fellow Sufjan fan, brotherman. I am fanatical about him :)

In the past 5 years...prob my favorite artist. I’m not religious but was earlier in life...love 7 Swans. I predicted to myself he too would lose his religion...as he seems to have mostly done so. Michigan, Illinois appeal to anyone who like pure tune craft.

His previous faith will impact him and be with him forever...as it has for me. Shadow of the Cross.

Perhaps I shouldn’t say he’s left his faith...don’t know that...just seems like it, sorta. And I’ll shut up now about religion.

Michigan is good, really good. But Illinoise is brilliance. It's Starry Night. It's Anna Karenina. It's The Brothers Karamazov. Seven Swans is Sufjan flirting with a Dylan-phase, but never fully realized, and in Sufjan's acid. Yet still devastatingly great. He's our modern-day Prince, just practicing in a different genre.

Trouty you are gaining serious cred with me!

No, I believe I read he's out of the church, now. Maybe a Pitchfork article, maybe Spin. But I do believe I've read it in the last 2-3 years.

Do you like Elliott Smith??

Not as familiar.
Do yourself a favor and check him out. Make it simple and start with Either/Or. He's Sufjan minus the instrumental/production chops, but still a devastating delivery, and poetic verses, and a haunting voice.

His girlfriend killed him, but his death is still listed as suicide by knife to stomach.

I will check that out...and maybe today.

Here’s a line from Mercury that I think about a lot.

“Where do you run to / Carrier friend”

Sufjan’s mother was named Carrie...and she ran out on Suf and his brothers and sisters, leaving them at a video store. Shattered his life. But I also sense a double entendre since a mother is a “Carrier”...carrying a baby. She carried them as babies...left them as children. Then Sufjan sought her ought as a friend in her last years and death.
