For me, it's because Crawford isn't a run down 1-technique. I'd expect him in more pass rushing situations.

so your saying that Collins is now the 1 technique and Crawford isnt suited for 3 technique? May have a point there.

Don't think we have enough information yet. As stated injuries will, and are playing a big part as well as suspensions.
I think Irving would be the starting LDE - if not for his 4 game suspension. Paea and Thornton will rotate at the 1DT, Collins will start at 3DT, with Crawford backing him up. RDE - will be between Taco (If he's not moved to LDE during camp) Tapper and Mayowa.
Lawrence may have to fill in at LDE to start while Irving is suspended, and where does Moore play RDE would be my guess. So...
LDE - Lawrence/Irving
1DT - Paea/Thornton
3DT- Collins/Crawford
RDE - Charlton/Mayowa/Tapper/Moore
Obviously someone will have to cover for Irving during the first 4 games, maybe either Tapper or Moore.
Crawford should solely be a backup/rotational 3DT. If he is starting at LDE its a fail, and he should never ever be playing 1DT !

Throw em all in at training camp and lets see who comes out where. This, in my opinion is one of the two most watched things of camp, well 3.
- Dline and who plays where
- Oline LG and RT
- Jaylon Smith and how ready to play is he ....

My 2 cents.

No, I'm saying Collins is now the 3 and Crawford is a backup/role player.

In my opinion.

Just because there isn't a lot of name recognition doesn't mean it stinks.

The numbers from last season concerning both pass rush and run defense have been posted time after time and neither figure was below average or could be considered bad.

Like Randy Galloway always said "watch the dang game". Instead of just relying on stats. If you watched the games, you would know we were horrendous at getting any consistent pressure on the QB. It was most definitely bad. Stats lie at times and can be manipulated. Actual play on the field with your own eyes can't be.

And unless you watch all the games... every team... every game... And then come up with some sort of rational grading system it's impossible to watch the games of one team and give it the blanket statement "Name a worse group (front 4) than this" or something to that affect– If you're approaching this with any sort of objectivity, which of course some do not (nor are they interested in that).

In addition this isn't the NFL of 1977 or 1992 or 2001... Sacks and pressures are much more difficult to come by for many reasons–which others have posted often but I guess the point still isn't getting into the noggins of some folks.

On the flip side I do not believe anyone posted, "Well this a great group!" I for one consider it a "mixed bag" and while they are not in the upper echelon they aren't the worst group in the NFL either.

If you're looking for "consistent pressure" then go back and watch the tapes from 20 years ago when defenses could get consistent pressure.
