When does the narrative for Garrett change?

Like Romo, Garrett's career has been much-maligned. Does the narrative for him change if he leads the Cowboys to a deep playoff run? Or will it take another season with a deep playoff run? Will people start describing him as a winner and as someone who has never had a losing season?

IMO If Garrett wins a SB its going to be hard for the media to deal with since he has, no skeletons, no vices, no real issues or hang ups to hang him with for a story. He's totally boring but not to the level of Belichek so he's the worst interview if you want to make an interesting story with him.
I hope he drives the ESPN crew crazy in the northeast when they try to knock him off his game. He'll just go off on "Process" and they will hang themselves.
After all is said and done, would be funny if he came out with a whole lot of inside stuff like him and Aikman getting drunk, chasing women the night before before Super Bowl XXX.

It will take a while. Many coaches, especially in today's parity-enforced league can have a winning record and/or make the playoffs in a single year. The key is consistency and staying power.

Lovie Smith was fired for going 11-5, 8-8, and then 10-6.

Brad Childress was fired half a season after going 10-6 and then 12-4 with the Vikings.

JG likely came within a hair of getting fired after last season. If he wins the Superbowl he'll be around a long time, otherwise, he's back to fighting for his job like most NFL coaches next season.

In summary if the Cowboy win a couple of playoffs games this season and then go out and have a 6-10 season next year, his job wouldn't and shouldn't be safe.

All you have to do is look at a number of the threads/posts, even very recently, to know that some, even on this site, have their minds made up and nothing Garrett accomplishes will change their all-knowing minds. It's like they've called so many bets against Red (and Romo) that they can't fold their hands even though they know they're holding a losing hand. Kind of sad, really.

I think the tune needs to change RIGHT NOW. I believe that Garrett deserves coach of the year award.

No one expected the Cowboys to do so well this year. I had them at 6-10. Heck, even Jerry was surprised that we've done so well.

I think you underestimate JJ. Garrett isn't going anywhere. The only way Dallas loses 10 games next year is because of major injuries, in which case, JJ won't hold the losing record against him...and he shouldn't. I would be shocked beyond shocked if JG isn't coach of this team four years from now.

Very fair assessment. For my money, Garrett is Coach of the Year. Fantastic job in his part.

But we see it across the league. You can make the playoffs, win awards, but if you haven't won it all and start to slip some, the bullseye is placed squarely upon you.

Heck, there's pressure on Tom Coughlin every year for crying out loud. Tomlin, too.

It's interesting how many current coaches were fired after their got their teams to the Superbowl but didn't win it:

• Harbaugh (sort of fired)
• Lovie Smith
• Jeff Fischer
• John Fox
• Ken Wisenhunt
• Andy Reid

Just getting to the Superbowl (but not winning it) certainly doesn't guarantee a long tenure.

It's pretty simple. Win in the playoffs. It's all about what you do in the playoffs. Always has been that way, always will.

I already have respect for him and Romo. Garrett has become a force. Seems like he's being a coach that smells blood and goes hunting. Romo has been someone without a conscious. No nerves, no anything. Just shoving greatness down opponents throats. I don't know if we will win any playoff games, but watching these two down the stretch, pretty amazing.

A lot later than it should have. But you know what? The narrative on Tony finally changed. For the longest time there was actual, serious debate as to whether or not Tony was a good QB for Dallas. That chatter has died off for all but a handful. Finally.

If Garrett keeps doing his job over time, the chatter will eventually die down. Until then, we'll have to smile and say 'that's nice that you think that' when people try to say that it's the DC or the OC or the ST coach or whatever it's going to be next.
