You have to have playoff wins to be considered a great head coach..............Romo is in the same boat, regular season stats are great but playoff wins is how a QB is ultimately judged.

I created this gif early on this season. I was never a hater but reserved my criticism in an effort to give it the time it needed. i for one feel the turnover in coaching on these teams throughout the NFL is a knee jerk reaction akin to scapegoating. All the while, more internal dysfunctions are what tie the hands of the coaches and or others within the system. It's a collective body that contributes to a teams success or failures.

I believe for the moment, we have most of the right pieces in place working together collectively.

The title game this year...SuperBowl next year...with more edge/inside-rushing ability. The game against G Bay has all the hallmarks of the '92 title game.

At this time last year most people wanted Garret gone. I think he will need to show a lot of people more than one season of success to change their minds. For me, the ship is turning, but he still needs to show me that this year is not a fluke.

Like Romo, Garrett's career has been much-maligned. Does the narrative for him change if he leads the Cowboys to a deep playoff run? Or will it take another season with a deep playoff run? Will people start describing him as a winner and as someone who has never had a losing season?

I think that - like Romo - all will be cured by winning a championship. Right or wrong, players and coaches are judged by winning the ultimate prize. Winning one clears up warts, while not winning one magnifies them.

I don't think the perception has ever changed.

Garrett, I believe, has always been considered a bright, innovative and marketable head coach. If anything has changed or been questioned, it would be Garrett's ability to succeed given his single-minded focus (vision) being compatible with leadership from the GM (Jerry) position.

Thank you. People are on this thread crowning JG and Romo for regular season games this year. Let's wait and see how the story plays out first. If we go one and done then what? Have a deep playoff run, get to a place this team hasn't been in the last 18 years, and then we have something to really talk about. We have a very beatable team in the first round of the playoffs and then an extremely tough team in the 2nd round in GB. Reminds me of 2009.

It's the team mindset Garrett has created. What they had in talent when Garrett took over they lacked in accountability(entitlement), leadership, and desire. The mindset now (with less overall talent) is one of togetherness, toughness, and accountability.

I would not say most people wanted Garrett gone, just a vocal Garrett hating club. Many people could see what was being built.

It will take a while. Many coaches, especially in today's parity-enforced league can have a winning record and/or make the playoffs in a single year. The key is consistency and staying power.

Lovie Smith was fired for going 11-5, 8-8, and then 10-6.

Brad Childress was fired half a season after going 10-6 and then 12-4 with the Vikings.

JG likely came within a hair of getting fired after last season. If he wins the Superbowl he'll be around a long time, otherwise, he's back to fighting for his job like most NFL coaches next season.

In summary if the Cowboy win a couple of playoffs games this season and then go out and have a 6-10 season next year, his job wouldn't and shouldn't be safe.

Spot on.

Perception is already starting to change. He's getting a lot of love from the national media, and even most fans who adamantly wanted him gone have given him credit for a good year. He deserves all the accolades he's getting for a good year and he deserves a nice extension. Even coach of the year considerarion.

But a one and done followed up with a mediocre season next year? He will be and should be right back on the hot seat. He needs to have a postseason run to by himself real job security, and even that is pretty fleeting.

I don't agree with you at all. It's a safe assumption that this board is a good representation of your average die hard Cowboys fan. Yeah, you are always going to find idiots on here that really should not be called a die hard fan, but for the most point, everyone here is a die hard fan. After three straight 8-8 seasons it was beyond a vocal Garrett hating club, you would have been hard pressed to find many Garrett supporters on this board after last season.

I would think to a degree that it already has - his name has been in the conversation for Coach of the Year, and he has earned that distinction.

Having success in the playoffs will further cement his status as a coach on the rise.

It's interesting how many current coaches were fired after their got their teams to the Superbowl but didn't win it:
  • Harbaugh (sort of fired)
  • Lovie Smith
  • Jeff Fischer
  • John Fox
  • Ken Wisenhunt
  • Andy Reid
Just getting to the Superbowl (but not winning it) certainly doesn't guarantee a long tenure.

Funny thing is a majority of those teams have done far worse without those coaches than with and some haven't sniffed a Super Bowl. I suspect the 49ers will be next if they don't make the right hire.

For some it won't end because their own pride and ego get in the way, they have hammered him so long they will not give him any credit. For others I think putting a consistent winning team on the field and being a true contender for SB will bring them around.

Then we will just have to agree to disagree. I believe the 8-8 seasons were remarkable. It was easy to see that the club was going through a rebuilding mode, coupled with unlucky injuries, and still managed to have non-losing seasons. There was something being built in Dallas and many could see it happening.

Who has considered Jason Garrett to be an innovative coach? If there was one trait I would list when it comes to Garrett, innovation would not be one of them.

winning two super bowls, one with Romo, one without, that should clear out most of the doubters, but there will likely always be stragglers

Agree. Todays " what have you done today media" only cares about the big one, and then you are part of the anointed group ( Cowher for example)....

They don't realize the joke of firing Harbaugh/Mike Smith who both took their teams to playoffs and in Harbaughs case a non winning SB....

When it comes to Dallas they are anxiously awaiting a L so they can restart their can't win rants. They will have missed the obvious not one of them picked us as a playoff team, and certainly not a Division Winners over their beloved " warp speed Eagles"
