When exactly was Dallas supposed to run the clock out?

They had the ball twice in the 3rd quarter. On the first drive they went 11 plays 6:35 minutes and got a FG.

Second drive Murray flat out drops a wide open pass. They can run it twice after that to run clock, but do you really want to give up on a drive inside your 20 in the 3rd Q. I don't. They probably could've run a draw on second down, but threw a short incomplete pass to Hanna. They tried to get a first and got sacked. It happens but at least the clock was running for all the complainers.

4th Q they go on a 10 play 90yd TD, 5minute drive to make it 36-24 with 7:55 left.

The Packers then go 80 yds for a TD for the 3rd time this half and score a TD for the fourth time in 4 tries to make it 36-31. Do you really believe Dallas can run out the 4:17 when GB has 3 TOs and the 2 minute warning. Dallas needs to keep scoring. On first down, Romo misses a wide open Dez after a great play fake. Sack on second, first down completion to Dez on third. Murray runs for 5yds on first down, GB TO. On second down a run/pass option is called. GB has 10 in the box to stop the run, so Romo goes with the quick slant option. Not a bad decision, but the throw was late and behind Austin. If he leads him it's probably a TD. Again, they weren't running out the clock and with a 10 man box, they weren't running for a first.

So if they went run, run there, GB uses another TO and gets the ball back after the punt with 2:00 left and no TOs. Does anyone think they hold GB on defense because GB had to use their TOs? Either way Dallas is in the same position of being down by one with around a minute left and 3 TOs.

Of course they could run it out. Two first downs and the game is OVER. Green Bay was already down to one timeout when we threw the first INT.

Two first downs running with a 10 man box, I don't think so. Matthews blows up either the run or the pass on that second down play. Escobar was nowhere near him to make the block.

You still force them to either use their TO or let the clock run down even further.

He meant literally RUN the clock out.

I appreciate the OP. I think we could've run at least once on the drive that ended with the Romo sack on 3rd down, but again, Murray drops a short pass in the flats on 1st down that would've been "like a run". We could've run it on 2nd down, but like the OP said, we threw short instead and missed Hanna. Those are high-percentage passes that gain a few yards and keep the clock rolling, we just happened to miss on them.

The fervor reminds me of the reaction after the Cowboys-Lions in 2011 when Romo infamously threw back-to-back pick sixes in the 3rd quarter and everyone was crying about "why aren't we running out the clock!?!?" Um, it was the THIRD quarter and we had already run it for most of those drives. Can't just run it 100% of the time starting early in the 3rd quarter, especially with this D.

You are preaching now. After that debacle in Detroit...I said I would rather lose TRYING to win....as opposed to lose trying not to lose. This team will go as far as Romo will take it. When Romo leads us on game winning drives (which he does)...everyone is happy. When he throws a pick (which he does) everyone is sad. Romo et al were livid with doing EXACTLY what everyone claims we should have done against Detroit. Becauese we were playing to turn the ball back over to the defense and ask them to close out a game. This defense CANNOT close out a game. So Romo tried to WIN It...and you are right...if the ball is further out in front of Miles...he probably score and we win. So I am not complaining. Because I HATE when we play give up football. Miles was OPEN. Better execution and NO ONE is talking about we should have run against 10 in the box for a 1 yard gain!

What does that accomplish? GB still drove right down and scored. In fact, it would've left Dallas with no time left to comeback just like the DEN game. Dallas scored on 2 of the 3 drives they had before the INT. No one was complaining about the offense on those 2 scoring drives.

LMAO!

Anyone trying to explain, at all, the piss poor decision making of throwing that many times in a game when you're running game is killing them is crazy.

The coaching yesterday was stupid as ever and stupid coaching breeds stupid players. It's why this franchise can't win.

Hahahah... remember the Cowboys-Patriots game in 2011? When we ran 3 straight times, punted, and Tom Brady marched down the field to beat us?

Remember the reaction from fans after the game? How Garrett was a spineless wuss who didn't trust his QB to close the game out?

I do.

ESPN guys, I think Schefter, just had a good point... We ran the ball more in the first half than we did in the second half, even though we obviously had a huge lead after halftime.

And the Packers ran the ball more than we did in the second half even though they were down 26-3.

How often have we heard from RJ that we had no choice but to pass it when we got down 10 in the second quarter? Bet Packer fans are glad McCarthy didn't get that memo.

It's still the smart thing to do and better than the alternative.
the smart thing to do is WATCH this defense allow another drive for a TD? Haven't we seen that enough? We have Romo close out more games than this defense. Not sure I can remember the last time this defense closed out a game...think Romo just took us on a game winning drive against Minnesota

Actually, there were people complaining. People with the same argument as you, that the defense can't stop anyone so you should be managing the game from a play clock angle the entire second half. You have to run the ball to kill clock and to keep your defense off the field.

And how did that plan work out for you? Was it successful? Has it been successful with any regularity this season?

But you still defend it...

The proof is in the pudding.

They went on 2 long scoring drives and that is not good enough? Why does it matter if it's a run or pass if you moving the chains? That's not a good argument.
