I wanted Ron Rivera, would have settled for Garrett, but saw and see the reason Wade got the job.

Like you, I no longer want him as HC. It isn't personal either because I don't dislike him. I just don't think his laid back approach is what this team needs to turn back around to where they were in 2007. We went too far the other way from the too stringent Parcells.
Jerry needs to stop going from 1 extreme to the other. How about a tough coach, who demands respect, who is organized, can hire his own staff, can hire/fire/cut/ his own players, and Jerry can sign off on it as if it's his ideals. But someone who isn't a jerk, and someone who isn't a pushover.

You actually just described Tony Sporano to a T, from everything I know about the guy.

So when did you decide Wade was a dud? Just curious.

I like both your posts on this topic.

Yup, loved that guy. But I didn't want him as a head coach, because we needed the defensive expert at the time.

Honestly I don't know what to think anymore. At the moment I have grave concerns that Jerry's circus atmosphere will ever allow consistent success. Perhaps lightning in a bottle momentarily, but then that will fuel Jerry once more to commercialize it all again. Honestly, at the moment I see that aspect as worse than it has ever been. His comment about Romo's celebrity status being something Jerry actually likes for his org is about the stupidest thing I think I've ever heard.

Its one thing for Romo to date who he chooses. Its quite another to suggest that Jerry likes his players to stir the pot to the point of potential distraction. With that comment Jerry has publicly stated that he doesn't believe in distractions. I have yet to see indication that he has changed his mind. I have always had great hope in Jones to figure things out even when he's been at his low points. I'm less hopeful than I have ever been.

Somehow, strangely, I could see Jason Garrett being a solution. Obviously its based more on my perceptions than fact. But somehow I see potential in this guy to find a way to rise above some of this crap. I'm not saying he's perfect, or even ready for prime time at the moment. I'm just giving you my hunch.

Just as importantly I could see Jerry believing in the guy as well, for the long term, and actually letting Garrett reign him in a bit a long the way where needed.

How deep is my conviction on Garrett? Not real deep. I am not truly convinced on much of anything about this team right now except that they are absolutely talented enough that they SHOULD be a team that is winning playoff games. And that somehow Jerry is part of the reason they are not.

  1. Wade Phillips, 0 playoff wins, but defensive experience.
  2. Norv Turner, history here, but questionable head coaching ability.
  3. Mike Singletary, had never been more than a position coach.
  4. Jason Garrett, had never been more than a position coach.
  5. Todd Bowles, had never been more than a position coach.
  6. Tony Sparano, had never been more than a position coach.
  7. Ron Rivera, DC for the Bears, but was it Lovie's Defense?
  8. Jim Caldwell, had never been more than a position coach.
  9. Todd Haley, had never been more than a position coach.
  10. Gary Gibbs, DC for the Saints, former position coach here.
These were the guys available that he interviewed. Other coaching changes happened when ours couldn't because Parcells was still in the office. He hadn't quit yet.

Wade was probably the best choice at that time. I can admit that.

Look who is available right now.

Mike Shanahan
Bill Cowher
Brian Billick
Mike Holmgren
Jon Gruden

I can't say he is now the best choice to be the Head Coach of this team right now. I simply can't say it with a straight face and conviction.

I think that frustrates me more than I care to admit.

Best post I have read since new year. 110% dead on.

I agree that he was the better choice then given the alternatives at the time.

Though I definitely know he is NOT what the team needs right now, we need a strong leader of men to whip this club in shape though with some balance.

You all should have realized he was a dud when his coaching history is abyssmal.

3 playoff wins as a coordinator in 30 years of coaching.

0 playoff wins as a head coach.

fired from every job because he loses control of the team EVERY WHERE HE GOES.

this isnt hard. it just was difficult to admit two years ago.

unless you were me.

Wade has no business being a head coach, DC coordinator okay, but NOT head coach

As a head coach you have to a father, brother, uncle, mentor, coach, friend and disciplinary. This is just tipping the iceberg of being a head coach.

I got excited when Singletary popped on to Jerry's radar two years ago. It would have been a risky, yet bold choice, and I was all for it.

Of the finalists, I was glad he picked Wade over Norv.

I think Wade is definitely done after 2009 regardless of what happens this season, and I think it will come down to Garrett or Holmgren in 2010.

If Garrett rebounds and has a good year, it will be him.

If he struggles again, I think Holmgren is the veteran guy on Hos's list that Jerry will turn to.

To me, the 2009 season will be all about the maturity and development of Tony Romo and Jason Garrett. They are the keys to Dallas' future.

Ideally, I would have wanted Norv Turner as our OC, Wade Phillips as our DC......and Bill Cowher as our HC.
