With Bohanna being heavier (40 lbs) and taller, you'd think he would be the space eater. Hopefully Hankins can teach the tricks of the trade to the others.
Bohanna weighs like 325 now - he hasn’t been at the 360lbs. some sights lost him at since college. He was 327 at his ProDay for Kentucky and is listed as 330 in the 2022 Media Guide. What seems to have happened to Bohanna is that he’s trying to be more of a gap-penetrator vs. a brick wall. Could be that the scheme is asking him to make plays instead of helping OTHERS make plays.

My question about this stat would be how often were we in a run-defense front when Hankins wasn't on the field. We should be better against the run when he's on the field because he's not out there in pass defense, and considering how much Chicago ran, a lot of those runs came against our nickel front.

A better comparison would be what the backs averaged when Bohanna was out there but not Hankins, since they both strictly play when we expect teams to run.

This is why Trysten Hill was waived:

Trysten can't stop the run like this. Between him and Big Bo I'm confident they can stop the run.

Hankins is about to get deeper into Dan Quinn's playbook during the bye week and be good to go for the home stretch of the season.

Hill was a 3tech that often played 1tech.

Marinelli wanted all 3tech DTs and he put the best run defending 3tech at 1tech.

Quinn actually wants true 1tech players. Hankins and Bohanna. Watkins is a tweener 1tech/3tech that had to play as the primary 1tech last season. Watkins had the most snaps by a DT in the playoff game.

Hill is 3tech but had been playing more at 1tech.

Quinn uses DEs inside on passing downs which limited the need to keep a significant number of 3techs.

Sounds like he just wants to argue. There's a few of them around here.

We don't need to be so technical everytime we post. smh

Technically, the phrase would be "every time" as two separate words. SMH as an acronym should be capitalized and as you have it on the tail end of another sentence, a period would be appropriate as well.

Absolutely amazing that it took Jerry this long to figure this out. Yes, a big run stopping DT at NT helps w/ stopping the run all over the D. As well as keeping your LB's on the field, as they don't get near as many ball carriers getting a free run. A guy who hasn't gotten up to full speed yet has a much less likely chance of hurting a player.
I still think we will give up runs to the outside.

Why are people comparing Hill and Hankins? Very different players and roles. Even Hill and Gallimore are different types of players, even though the two are probably equally effective, or ineffective.

I see Hill as a tweener. He is not a big run stuffing DT, but he is also not a guy like Osa Odighizuwa who is supposed to be more active. Watch Osa and he will run sideline to sideline chasing runners. Hill would do that too. Bohanna, Gallimore and Hankins are not that kind of player. Hill is more like Watkins and will likely turn out to be the same kind of player when his career gets to where Watkins' is.

I think the reason the Cowboys got Hankins was not because of the Bears. I think it was because of the Eagles short yardage scrums with the QB.

The Cowboys were not that bad against the inside runs before they got Hankins. But they had no one who could really stuff those 3rd and 4th and one dives up the middle.

yes, and most of the bigger runs were off tackle or outside. hopefully our LBs and Safety's can get bater at who they take on RPO or those bootleg fakes etc. they are crashing down bit too hard and over run the ball carrier.

The Bye week with rest and going over deficiencies should help. maybe Clark will be a better option going forward as well.

I agreed w/ everything until your last paragraph. Yes, we were bad against inside runs. Very bad. And when Galley and Osa were playing DT, we were very bad. Stats were shown, over 5 YPC w/o Hankins in there.

If over 5 YPC is not that bad, I'd hate to see bad!!!!!!!!!!!!

If he requires a complete double team on running plays, we will see much better LB play as well.
Thats my hope as well. Damone Clark getting better every week will help. That sideline to sideline speed he has you cant teach. Let Clark spy. Hankins plug the middle and let Micah be Micah.

My comment was incomplete. I meant their run defense in the middle was not that bad. Most of the yardage on the ground against the Cowboys has been outside the tackles. I am not saying the run defense in the middle was great. They could not stop anyone for no gain , but the real problem is those runs outside the tackles.

If you go back and review the games, the Bucs averaged 4.6 yards per carry and almost all of that came on outside runs. The Bengals only averaged 3.6 yards a carry for the game. The Giants gain 167 and averaged 6.7 but most of that was Daniel Jones who ran for 79 and Barkley's TD run for 36 yards - outside.

Washington averaged 5.3 yards per carry and that was the only game where the Cowboys had problems in the middle of the line I think. The Rams couldn't run at all against Dallas and the Eagles, with their vaunted running game averaged 3.5 yards per carry, which was mostly 5 runs out of 39 carries.

The Lions averaged 4.7 yards which was below their season average at the time. The Bears averaged 5.6 yards and as someone posted an average of 3.5 yards for runs up the middle.

I have no doubt Hankins will be a big improvement in the middle of the defense. But the problem with the Cowboys run defense has always been those runs outside the tackles. How many yards to Lawrence give up on runs to his side because he got caught inside? If the Cowboys DEs would just lurn to contain the edges, the run defense will be improved tremendously.

OK, but those runs off tackle are helped by the outside guys having to crash in to protect a very weak middle. A weak middle causes problems everywhere on D.

Now imagine if we could have traded with the Bears to get Roquan Smith...Since Hankins made such an improvement to our run defense, imagine what the both of them would have done....I think we missed an opportunity...

Cowboys fans had no idea that DTs could tackle. I always thought their job was to be blocked. Who knew?

We do things backwards here. The NT tackles, the DE doesn't set the edge and LB go to get blocked.
