When will we know something about these Cowboys?

The answer depends on what you're looking for.. If you want to know if the team has talent that question is already answered.. If you want to know if the offense can still point point up. put check next to that one too. If you want to know if the defense will skip a beat under Zimmer.... another check mark.. If you want to know if they can win the division? another check mark. If you want to know if they are deep playoff run worthy? You gotta wait till January.. Even how they play in the last game tells you nothing.. Remember two years ago when they fell flat at Washington then went on the road and curb stomped the Bucs? Every week, every game is a different test for these teams. Acting as if passing one test automatically guarantees you will pass the next is stilly. Same with losing.. One loss does not doom your season, unless of course it's playoff loss. Teams have down weeks and bounce back. We will not know if this team has the mental toughness to survive three straight weeks of playoff football until they play three straight weeks of playoff football. Any attempt to read ahead is a waste of time. But it's your time to waste.. so have at it.

I admit that I was pretty disgusted by these armchair losers who flooded this forum with their meaningless opinions about the Cowboys after one game. One game? Why can't these losers get a life?!

But whatever, I get it. Every fan forms an opinion at some point. For example, I would be really impressed if the Cowboys were to beat the Saints and the Ravens. But even then, I kind of want to wait and see until after the Niners game. By then, we should have a good sample size to begin making a judgment.

What say you, boy?
There will be indications throughout, but with rookies at key OL positions and tough defenses scheduled early it's possible some losses will be stacked up that would have been wins if played in January when the rookies are better.

I'm willing to converse rationally, any positional group.
Let's start with LBs.
Totally agree on the LB’s.

At least after one game.

And my hope is Zimmer’s defense has a much better showing against the likes of SF, Balt, etc…

We should have a good idea of how good this team is at the bye. At Pittsburgh won't be easy either. The one thing that concerns me is how we show up against the Ravens and 49ers. Last year those games against the Bills and 49ers told me this wasn't a team that was in contention for a championship. Week 3 is kind of early, but you have to at least show up. Appear to belong on the same field.
Agree. And it's not necessarily the win or loss, it's more about how we play.

I lost steam last year after the Cards debacle. That game simply made no sense. You cannot lose in that way and expect to compete for a title. And no, it's not about the loss, it's about the way we lost. Couldn't stop the run.

We had the same start last year with the Giant blow out..........everything was Guns n Roses........and then past mid season we get kicked in mouth by other playoff teams which carried over to the playoffs.

So midseason or a little after will be a good gague of where the Cowboys are at, but winning more then one game in the playoffs is the ultimate goal in my eyes, anything less is same old same old.
Completely different scenario. Browns are a quality team, Giants were not.

Take one week at a time grasshopper.
:hammer: 100% week to week league, as much as a year to year league, SO, until the bigger picture is raveled. no need to look ahead, players and coaches dont, we shouldn't,

the NFL season is the shortest out of all the professional sports as well as the playoffs being one and done and with a super long offseason we need to learn to appreciate each game each week.... But hey that's my opinion.

First of all you should be upset over all the fools in here which I'm betting you might have been part of it I don't know I have to look back 'cause I kept receipts for a lot of people saying how historically bad the offseason was and I really believe they overreacted as usual just like the last three years turned out we were 12 win team which is hard to do three years in a row winning 2 divisions 36 games and go to the playoffs 5 at the last eight years. And yet this narrative that Jerry did absolutely nothing to improve the team that the bargain bin basement nonsense it builds up over time and some of us explode over game one when we see that all the talk was for nothing....

Now for your answer to the question at hand,

for me ,its a week to week league, as much as a year-to-year league, SO, until the bigger picture is raveled. no need to look ahead, players and coaches don't, we shouldn't,

the NFL season is the shortest out of all the professional sports as well as the playoffs being one and done and with a super long offseason we need to learn to appreciate each game each week.... But hey that's my opinion.

Let's be honest.....our regular season is nothing more than a test drive. Most fans/media are waiting for the postseason.
I've bought a new truck every year, for the last 28 years. I wouldn't but one with test driving it. If the test drive is a fail, there is no postseason.

Right. Win or lose, show up. Play tough.

It wasn't just the game against the Cards. Buffalo and the 49ers ran us into the ground as well. I'm just curious as to why our offense struggles when our run defense struggles. It makes no sense.

You can look at games like 9ers and Bengals as definite markers. But honestly, I really think very little matters until January. The Cowboys could plow through the regular season, and skepticism in the playoffs will still be through the roof.

It honestly doesn’t matter what we do in the regular season. We could go 17-0 and I still wouldn’t be sold on us until we do something in the postseason.

The Cowboys have had a coaching adjustment and discipline issue since Jimmy Johnson left. That issue could bite them at any given time. You could have the most talented team in the NFL and they could lose their first playoff game due to it.

So, that aside, when will we know how talented this team is? I would say after game 7. Their first 7 games are a gauntlet. Going 4-3 or 5-2 through that stretch would leave them as one of the most talented teams in the NFL (IMO).

Coming into the year I thought Dallas was going to take a step back but between Zimmer and the draft class, I might be wrong.

Every game. You can see how every player is performing and what schemes the coaches are using that year. By halfway through, you should know the offense and defense being ran and how it matches up against various opposing personnel.
