I would lose all faith in the braintrust if Keith Davis' situation impacted our draft plans in any manner.

We are counting on Davis to play ST and compete for the FS spot -- nothing more.

Of course it affects our draft. If Davis isn't here we need a starter. If we're drafting a starter we'll do so definitely on the first day and probably by the second round. If we don't need a starter we can wait til at least the 3rd round.

I think you are assuming that we went into the off-season with Davis slotted to start in '06. Given his performance last year in that role I just can't see how that would be true.

The way I see it we were looking for a starter at that position either way.

Yes, that's what I'm assuming. From the comments I've read, that seems pretty obvious. BP and JJ haven't been as down on him as us fans. I think the 'braintrust' felt that Davis could start and we could draft a third rounder and develop him for the future. With Davis gone we may need an INSTANT starter, which would cause us to take one of the top tier players in the first two rounds.

Lots of 3rd, 4th and even 7th rounders at FS can start as rookies. With strong players at the other positions you can make that work much more easily.

e.g. Kerry Rhodes 4th round Jets, Chris Harris 6th round Bears -- both last year.

Davis isn't dictating anything here. Of course, we'll never know because we are going to re-sign him anyway.

Agreed. For the most part those are exceptions and not the rule. They're probably exceptions because it was a last resort type thing. Sort of like Dallas starting a 6th round RT for 16 games. Either way, it certainly doesn't speak to the desirability of having our starting FS drafted in the 5th round.

If you say so. I would be willing to wager there will be no less than 4-5 guys at pick 80 that would be an upgrade day 1 over Davis. Davis wasn't even drafted. Heck I'd rather start Beriault than Davis, but that's just me.

Honestly, I don't give a rat' s :mule: in what round, or where we get a FS.
I want a guy that can come in and contribute right away. Nothing against Davis, (I wouldn't mind keeping him around, even though it's a little pricey) but we could really use a "ball-hawk" type guy back there. I would think though, if we adressed that in the draft somewhere between 2nd- 4th rounds we could find our guy.

not really only 5 guys listed with the position of FS were taken last year between 3-7 -- that might not reflect actual position but 2 of 5 isn't really an exception
