Where are the Merriman threads now?

San Diego and Merriman get gashed for nearly 300 yds by a rookie RB, the same RB Ware and the Cowboys held to 60-some yds the previous game. Ware has 7 sacks, Merriman 5.5. Merriman looks very average now that he's off the juice, playing outside of Wade's attacking style, and not having the advantage of a great offense that builds leads that let you tee off on the QB.

That's why I think steroid users should be given an automatic 1 yr. ban. There is no question the strength they gain from the roids gives them an unfair advantage. And although I don't know for sure, I doubt the effects go completely away in 4 games.

Ware leads Merriman in sacks, TFL, and as of a couple weeks ago, he led Merriman in QB pressures and QB hits (not sure if he still does).

It only takes one touch, to bust off 40+ yard TD runs

The difference is that we had the lead in the 2nd half, whereas the Chargers didn't.

He had close to the same amount of carries in the first half of the Chargers game as the first half of the Dallas game. In the first half of the Chargers game he gained about 70 yards. And, of course, we know how the second half of that game turned out.

yeah but my point is the coach took the ball out of peterson's hands. we weren't blowing out the vikes to were they had to stop using the running game.

OK, but I don't see Ware getting 17 sacks in 12 games. I honestly thought Ware would be putting up bigger numbers this year.

I think most of those threads are in the archives if you'd like to read them. :)

If Peterson hadn't rushed for 46 yard and 64 yard touchdowns, they wouldn't have had the lead, resulting in Peterson getting more carries.

Merriman will likely never reach those numbers again either.

But Ware has had 7 sacks in the past 6 games. If he can keep that pace up, he'll end the season with at least 16. He might even increase that pace given familiarity with the scheme and Ellis getting healthier.

Or he could try taking steroids. That'd probably help.

He had those two long TD runs in his first 14 carries. He didn't have anything like that against us in close to the same amount of carries.

He is also an OLB.

Yeah, Merriman did it. Whoop-de-do. Is Merriman doing it again this year? No. Last year was probably just a great year from him and most likely an outlier.

If Ware finishes with double digit sacks again, this will be the first time in how long since we've had someone post back to back 10+ sack seasons?

And he is a OLB. Which means he also gets to drop into coverage. Yeah, he is rushing the QB more this year. But he doesn't rush the QB as much as DE's do.

7 sacks thru 8 games. I'll take that every year from Ware.

Ware is getting better and better, I think next year he will be a Defensive Player of the Year candidate.

There have been several statistical analyses done about Merriman's 2006 season. One showed that Merriman feasted on extremely poor pass-protecting teams. Against an average pass-protecting schedule, he would have had several fewer sacks. The other showed that he had a low number of non-sack QB hits/knockdowns and pressures, which has been the case with him each season. Part of that is because he often gets "clean-up" sacks that were created by other players or the coverage, and part is because he gets a number of "scheme" sacks when he comes unblocked for an easy sack. As far as providing consistent pressure, Merriman hasn't been nearly as good as some might think by looking at his sack totals.

But Ware has had 7 sacks in the past 6 games. If he can keep that pace up, he'll end the season with at least 16.

Ware also hasn't had one of those three-sack games yet. He's had consistent pressure in every game, but I fully expect one of those breakout games sooner or later.

The way it should be.

Ware is the better overall 3-4 OLB and the league is finally understanding that :p
