Yep, I know exactly where Gloversville is. My cabin is on/in White Lake about 10-12 miles south of Old Forge in the Adirondacks. Love it up there, year round beauty.
Yes it is beautiful up there and me growing up I took it for granted. I went to Lake Tahoe with a friend of mind when I first moved out here and it was like I was at home without the gambling

Live in a rural area of WV. Not much in this area. Cost of living is not high but WV loves them some taxes..not sure if true or not but read we were the first state to have a state income tax. Of course it is still not as bad as some places.

Crime is pretty low. My inlaws never lock their doors...not at night or when they go somewhere. We live a few houses down and I lock the doors all the time. We have a few drug heads in a place a few houses down but they normally stick to that area. As I said crime is pretty low but with prescription drug abuse and meth everywhere now it has made its way to rural areas in WV where it used to be just in bigger cities.

The summers are hot and muggy, the winters can be cold and full of snow at times although the last couple of winters it has been more rains than snows.

Not much to do around this area unless you like outdoor sports. We have some skiing places in WV (never went). Plenty of white water rafting sites, bungee jumping, camping places, four wheel trails, hiking trails, biking trails, hunting and fishing...like I said if you like outdoor sports you can find them in WV in wilderness and mountain areas. Can be quite beautiful in spring and fall just seeing the trees and mountain ranges.

With that said...If I had the money and ability...I would move in a heartbeat. But if you want a laid back place, for the most part, that has lower crime rates (then many places) and like outdoor things or different seasons...WV might be for you depending where you go. Some counties and towns can be in really bad shape and would be best not to move in those areas. Some other places could be really nice and chances are you could get a real good deal on land and a house.

I remember when I was stationed in Ft Polk in Louisiana...I used to think there was no way I would want to live in that state due to the hot humidity in summer and not much around the area unless you were in NOLA and that would get old after a time.

However there was a mid sized town down there that we would go to some clubs and shopping at that was really nice. It was too big to be a small town but not big enough to be a huge city...of course that could have changed as I have not been there in over 20 years.

IT just seemed like it was nice place that had stuff to do but still had that small town feel.
It was called Lake Charles. Had a lake there that spilled into a much larger lake as you went south and that spilled into the Gulf. It was not too far from the Texas Border with Beaumont and Port Arthur probably being the biggest Texas towns on that side.

Growing up in the Northeast, let me just say the winters can be long. It might start snowing in October and not stop until May. February is usually brutally cold and when most people start to go stir crazy from the winter. They even came up with a mental disorder for it call Seasonal Affect Disorder.
That would explain my upcoming killing spree. Somebody, keep this as argument for the Defense.
Seriously though, Winter sucks here in New England. It's usually either very snowy or extremely cold. Sometimes it's both. If anyone ever says to you, "It's too cold to snow.", just turn around and him in the knee.

I hear you. There is a saying in the Northeast that goes "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute, it'll change."

Just move to the USVI. You don't need a passport and you the views are beautiful and even when the sun is beating down you have a nice breeze to make it feel nice.
Plus you can go fishing, boating, snorkeling, scuba or just sit on a deck with a nice cold drink and enjoy the view or the sounds of the waves. And the clearness of the water with all different shades of blue is amazing...and again...no passport as it is a US Territory. But you can get fixed up with some papers and go on a short day cruise to the British Virgin Islands.

So what if it costs a little more. The views, sounds and relaxation might pay off in less stress based health bills later down the road.

Plus I would look forward to visiting you if you have any special mod parties.:D

You've been, BP? One of my battles that's still in (SFC, now) is from Antigua

Just USVI, St Thomas. Did not get to go to BVIs.

Would love to go back.

Go to St. John - my favorite place in the Caribbean. Outstanding snorkeling, very quiet, and, as it is a protected natural park, limited construction on the island, so the amount of people to deal with isn't high at all.

How is it, Plankton? Chicago city life?

Great city as long as you stay north of 35th Street and east of Western Avenue. Fantastic restaurants, culture, always something to do. Winters suck, but the rest is pretty good. My town is 12 miles from downtown, but I might as well be 50 miles away. I get the benefit of living in a big city area with the trappings of the suburbs.

Sounds like my neck of the woods, relative to downtown LA, Plankton. Almost literally to the mile.

Thanks for sharing, sir.
